A fun and educational way to experience Bikbao

    · Bilbao Gold Coast E-Bike Tour

Bikes were great, guide was excellent. We learned a lot about the history and culture of Bilbao and discussed many interesting topics with our group of four. Hearing what our guide was saying was sometimes a challenge but it is hard to bunch together on a sunny Sunday in September - people and other riders are out and about too.

We can't wait to schedule our next trip!!!

    · Swiss Lakes by E-bike: Lake Geneva to Lake Lucerne

This was a trip of a lifetime. My husband and I have never done a bike tour before, and we were so impressed with Switzerland. It has to be one of the best countries to bike in--they have fresh spring water all over the countryside (see pic), bike route signs that are more visible than the street signs, and views that are absolutely breathtaking. I'm still trying to soak it all in and we went a month ago in July/August. My husband is a professional photographer so we stopped constantly to take pictures. Now on to more details...
We arrived a day early so we could rest and get used to the time change. We decided to fly into Zurich and take a train to Montreaux. We got a hotel right on the water--and it was SO worth it. Montreaux has a walking path all along Lake Geneva and it's just gorgeous. A great way to start your trip.
We brought our own helmets, pedals, and shoes. We figured it would be better on the hills to be able to push and pull. The tour company was willing to let us bring a suitcase and a backpack for luggage transport (we had the extra helmets and pedals). We opted for the hybrid bikes vs the e-bikes. My husband mountain bikes every day. I did about 80% of my training on a peloton stationary bike.
The first day of biking it takes awhile to get used to the bike and the signs. We got a little lost because of detours. We also weren't familiar with the maps provided. We thought we were supposed to stay on Route 9, but day 1 and 2 they had us going on route 59. We didn't realize this until we finally found our hotel the first day. Our luggage wasn't there yet at 5:00 so I highly recommend bringing something light to change in to so that you can shower if you beat your luggage.
Day 2 we basically just did route 59 until it met back up with route 9. The only booklet we had was for route 9 so I wasn't aware that it would be a 3500 foot ascent. We climbed...and climbed and climbed. The bike has plenty of gears though--so I just put it on the lowest gear and balanced going 2 mph. Gstaad was just gorgeous--as was Schoenreid. We LOVED the hotel there. They were amazing. Our luggage wasn't there yet but they greeted us with a warm towel and champagne.
We had a rain delay on day 3, but we ended up getting out by 11 that morning and we are glad we did. We saw some amazing views and only had to go a little over 20 miles--flat miles.
Day 4 we decided to skip the boat to Interlaken and just follow route 9--which added about 10 miles. The 4 lakes you bike along are just stunning. The water color is Caribbean blue! That day is relatively flat other than a pretty long climb up to a gorgeous waterfall. So worth it. We stayed in Wilen, but I would recommend going 2 extra miles and staying in Sarnen. There weren't any restaurants or anything in Wilen. We ate at our hotel--which was AMAZING though. We had a 2 course steak dinner. I've never had that before.
Day 5 we biked to Lucerne. It was a pretty easy day. Lower mileage and pretty flat. We took the advice from a previous review and stayed in Lucerne. I regretted it. It's a nice city--but it was so crowded and over priced compared to the serenity we enjoyed the other parts of the trip!!
Day 6 we started in Lucerne vs Zug which is 100km from Rapperswill. My husband convinced me to bike the entire thing since it was our last day. We did it! It wasn't easy but what a way to go out. The last climb into Lake Zermatt is a giver--but the view at the top of the hill is breathtaking.
We got alot better at reading the signs. Someone gave us a tip at the beginning--if you don't see a sign for awhile, you probably missed one--because there are so many. You definitely need to download maps.me and make sure you download all of the Switzerland maps (6) so you don't end up in an area you haven't downloaded yet when you need it. (day 1 for us!)
There was more of a language barrier than I expected. They spoke french the first day or two and then German. Many people in the country don't speak English; however they always seemed to know what "beer" was. :)
Things would have gone smoother if the travel documents had just a simple bullet point or two rather than an arrow buried in the map. We were so set on Route 9 that a simple note that told us to look for Route 59 here and here would have been really helpful. Every single time I emailed before the trip asking questions, the staff responded quickly. It was great. They are also pretty flexible so if you want to stay in one place vs another or want to spend a couple days in one city--let them know, chances are, they can probably accommodate your request. We upgraded to the Class A hotels and definitely recommend that. We also took everyone's advice and got sandwiches for lunch, so we could stop anytime we needed to. There were quite a few places along the way to grab a quick sandwich though. It seemed like kitchens closed 2-6. Coops will become your friend fast!
We definitely recommend this tour and we plan on possibly doing it again soon!!!  SHOW MORE

    Good variety; excellent hosts

    · Catalonia Road Bike Tour: Girona to the Sea

This was our second trip with www.biketours.com. We were excited because the host company uses the same road bikes that we own. Daniel, working for a local operator, was great. He not only met us to give us our bikes, but he changed the pedals (we brought our own) and he watched you ride to make sure it fit. He was super communicative throughout the trip. Girona was great. It's busy but the motorists are actually courteous to cyclists--which was a treat compared to many places in the states. The first hotel is in a great location--however it can be noisy since it's a busy city. Watch out for glass walls & doors--they are everywhere down there. We highly recommend Eat Sleep Cycle as a place to grab food and or drinks after. We watched the tour there after. Many cyclists come there after their rides. Our favorite was the second stop--Costa Brava. It was gorgeous and such a relaxing hotel!! Definitely recommend doing the walk to the left of the hotel. The views are great. The ride along Costa Brava was a challenging one but the views made the work worth it. Monells was way more quiet with only a few restaurants. The hotel was fantastic. Excellent customer service and restaurant. Very relaxing. The ride was okay--not as exciting as the other days. We modified the second day here not to overlap Pals. We ate lunch both days in Corca--just 2.5 miles up from Monells at Raku. Great food. Takes awhile but it's outside with a canopy of trees. You get a three course meal with a glass of wine or coffee for 21 euro. We always did it after our ride so we could just relax after. Highly recommend. We did the climb back to Girona. NOT easy but beautiful, and rewarding--a great way to end the trip. We took the fast train back to Barcelona Sants. We had a day and a half before our flight and rather than tackle busy and loud Barcelona, we stayed in Castelldefels--it's along the sea and only 10 miles from the airport. A beach view hotel room cost the same as downtown Barcelona and it was super relaxing with lots of restaurants and a very long beach walk. We stayed at Hotel dONNA. I recommend it.
    A couple of travel tips:
We landed in terminal 1. The train station is in terminal 2. You have to take an airport shuttle and then figure out the trains to take a regional one to Barcelona Sants and then jump on the fast train to Girona. I would recommend just taking a taxi from the airport to Barcelona Sants. The train stations in Barcelona are a bit nuts. If you can, I also recommend buying your train ticket ahead of time--the train station at Barcelona Sants was insane and not easy to navigate. It all ended up okay, but it was the most stressful part of our journey especially after being up all night.
There's not an abundance of water everywhere. I recommend buying big bottles to fill up your water bottles and also carry one around because even most restaurants make you pay for water.
My husband is a photographer and took a billion photos. Once he has them all processed, I hope I can come back on and add them!  SHOW MORE

Loved every minute. Can’t wait todo another

    · · Amsterdam – Bruges by Bike and Boat – Princesse Royal

My husband and I booked this trip with several friends but we made many new friends on the trip. The guides were so knowledgeable and they too became friends. Each day we would start with a delicious breakfast, make our sack lunch and head out to get our bikes. The days were filled with wonderful cities and gorgeous countrysides. I don’t think you could have this kind of experience in a car or bus. We would have a morning break for coffee and later a stop for lunch either in city pubs or country inns. We returned back to the boat to find appetizers and the bar ready to receive orders. We could return to the comfort of our room for a hot shower or go in the hot tub. Always places you could find to be alone. The days followed the same routine, but the sites an food were always changing. Speaking of food, our chef did a fantastic job cooking for all 30 of us. The ship Captain and crew all pitched in to get our meals out quickly. Evening were sometimes optional tours or casual strolls along the water. Each day was magical.

    Incredible Experience

    · Prague to Dresden Along the Vltava & Elbe Rivers

This was my first bike tour and I cannot say enough positive things about my experience. Our group was small with 5 bikers and 2 guides. The other bikers were very friendly and we all got along well. The guides were incredible and I could not have asked for more supportive, friendly, helpful people to enjoy this experience with. The accommodations each night were very comfortable and in perfectly safe areas.

While it was definitely a physically demanding trip, it was attainable and we all completed the trip perfectly fine. While I do bike regularly, I'm certainly not the ideal specimen of fitness. I bike around 30-50 miles a week and found the trip a little more difficult than I anticipated. But again, I would not let this discourage you from going.

The guides were all from the Prague/Dresden area and so were able to share historical and relevant information about the sites and cities along the way. This trip was more than a bike tour--it was also a cultural tour. In addition, the sites are absolutely breathtaking. I'm giving myself a few weeks to recover and then planning my next one!

    Exploring Slovenia by bike

    · Best of Slovenia: Highlights Across the Country From Bled to Piran

This was our 5th self-guided cycling trip, and a great way to see Slovenia. The route was great and highlighted the different areas of the country, from the alps to the adriatic. There are some hills which can be challenging in the heat, but very manageable with some training. Most of the roads were fairly low traffic; even on the busier roads Slovenians seemed to be pretty courteous to cyclists. There were some gravel roads which were manageable. Note that there is some conflicting information about whether you'll receive a paper copy of the route directions - you won't unless you've requested this for a fee. And there was also supposed to be one odometer included per couple - there wasn't. So I strongly suggest having a phone with a data plan so that you can follow the GPS instructions. These were fairly easy to follow, but in some cases the app had trouble finding the route so having access to google maps, etc was handy.

Hotels were good for the most part with some being really great; a couple were only adequate, but that is likely due to what is available in the specific town. Included breakfasts were all fabulous. We arranged to spend an extra day in Ljubljana after day 3, which was a great idea. We also added extra days in Piran which we were happy with. For lunches and other stops during the riding day, there are recommendations that appear on the app. However, these don't seem to be in any order for each day, so it's probably worth while to take a look at them all before you set out for the day to see what they're recommending and where.

Overall a really great vacation! Biketours.com was great to work with for booking, and although we had no issues needing local support, we were happy with the planning and the bikes were perfectly adequate.

Spain is very bike friendly and the bikes/ (and pedal assist e-bikes) were of great quality. The Hotels on this trip were very comfortable and provided nice breakfasts. The rides each day were moderate as described. On the first 3 days , you ride alongside beach views. After that, you do some countryside rides. On every ride and evening there were a bunch of outside cafes to choose from. It was an excellent mix of scenery. Thanks.

    Medieval Spain villages was amazing

    · Medieval Villages of Catalonia

Spain is very bike friendly and the bikes/ (and pedal assist e-bikes) were of great quality. The Hotels on this trip were very comfortable and provided nice breakfasts. The rides each day were moderate as described. On the first 3 days , you ride alongside beach views. After that, you do some countryside rides. On every ride and evening there were a bunch of outside cafes to choose from. It was an excellent mix of scenery. Thanks.

    Increíble

    · Bergen to Sognefjord: Cycle Norway's Greatest Landscapes

    ride, fun, explore. ride somemore

    · Vienna to Budapest (Classic)

A great way to travel from Vienna to Budapest and see what each country offers. From corn fields, small villages, beautiful scenery and amazing cities. The trip was very well organised and the app so easy to use throughout the trip. If you are thinking of doing this trip, stop, just do it.
