    Great trip highly recommended

    · UNESCO Sites of Albania

What a great way to see Albania. Each day brought new sights, history and great roads. Perfect weather in mid-October. Accommodations were clean and well equipped. Food was nutritious, traditional, plentiful and delicious. Bikes were good for most with a couple of small breakdowns for some. Most were on e-bikes and there was always enough batteries for everyone everyday. Great guiding to ensure everyone knew where to go, but not so much to burden the flow of the ride. Most of the roads were exceptional twisty winding roads with minimal amount of “highway” with truck traffic. Views of the mountains and Ionian Sea were breathtaking. We downloaded the map files provided and uploaded them to Komoot so we always knew where we were and where we were going.

    Great Bike Trip Through Burgundy

    · Burgundy Wine Trails: Beaune to Macon on the “Voie Verte”

The company was easy to work with to set up trip. Meetings were easy and info provided worked well. Accommodations were fine and bikes were great. The gps app provided worked well and the trails were great. There was a major detour where path was closed for work that got a little interesting finding our way, would have been good if we had been forewarned. The information on sites to visit and wineries along the trail would have been nice to have a couple weeks before the trip to make reservations, they were provided the day prior to starting. All in we had a great time the scenery and towns were amazing. France is a great place to do a bike trip as they have a very strong biking culture. We loved it.

    Alsace Canals & Vineyards

    · Alsace Wine Country

The countryside and towns of Alsace are a great bicycling experience. The roads and trails are fairly flat and well marked. There is a bakery in every village!

Generally, we had excellent meals and accommodations. We had one hotel with a four star rating that was not air conditioned. We also had another hotel that did not offer any choices on the half-board menu.

We found our hybrid bicycles not quite up to climbing the few hills. We needed more low gears! Overall the turn-by-turn directions were adequate but sometimes confusing as our route did not always follow the posted bicycle travel signs.

We had a wonderful time enjoying the scenery and people along our tour and we will definitely come back to France for more.

    Bike trip recommended

    · Florence to Rome

The scenery was great - how could rural Italy be otherwise! The maps and instructions - and especially the 'E' stickers posted along the route, were excellent. The bikes were fine - no suspension but certainly good seats.

We only saw our contact person briefly at the beginning and end of the ride and didn't feel especially well supported although I'm sure if we had had a major problem, someone would have stepped up. (I'm comparing with a Czech Bike Tours 5 day trip we did last summer.)

We sought a gradient map of the route before booking it and only got a fairly hard to read and un-useful GPX one. Again, last year in the Czech Rep we found good gradient maps for each day on the website. It's quite nice to know when there's a big hill coming up! That said, the maps which were provided in the briefing the night before we set out had arrows in 2 colours showing steep uphill and steep downhill.

We are 4 relatively fit 60-year-olds. The biking was tough at times but we certainly managed it. We WOULD recommend it. (As an indication, with a coffee mid-morning and a picnic lunch and photos taken along the way, we were on the road from about 8.30am-4pm, perhaps a little less.)

The hotels were great, more charming than they looked on the website, although not always easy to find! (There are no more E stickers to follow). And - as we'd expected - accommodation was invariably in a town on a good sized hill! Hotel staff were great.

Bikes were phenomenal, hotels were great. Only complaint was all our paperwork was in German. So then we got online English versions which could not be printed to put in the map holder. AND the new printed materials did not match the route maps. It was very confusing!

    · Vienna to Budapest (Classic)

Beautiful trails. Exceptions were about 7 K in muddy conditions, 10-12 K on poorly packed gravel. Touring bicycle handled trails well and we're quite stable plowing through mud. Biking guide was inadequate with confusing written guidance separated from related maps. Need detailed cue sheets with clear details on turns, distance etc. Hotels mostly above my expectations although those with no elevators were burdensome.

    Mostly fantastic

    · Dolomites to Venice Along the Old Dolomites Railway Track

This trip used rental bikes and was self-guided. The basics worked well with hotel bookings and luggage transfers. The bikes were fine for this but had minor deficiencies. The joining instructions were incorrect but were sorted out with a phone call. Routings were chosen to highlight scenery and views while avoiding traffic. The map sets were disappointing as directions were muddled. Other cyclists had the same complaint. But it was a great trip nonetheless.

Peaceful tour of some lovely countryside and beautiful little medieval villages.

    · South of France: UNESCO World Heritage Sites

We surely enjoyed this trip. The beginning in St. Gilhem le Desert was perfect - such a lovely little town nestled into the mountains. There were a lot of uphills and wonderful long downhills on quiet roads. It was a nice variety of scenery and towns. We were particularly grateful for our Ebikes as the hills would have been difficult and tiring without them. It was a most enjoyable bike tour all round.

    · Bolzano to Verona: Orchards, Mountains & Timeless Culture

The first half of this tour was an enjoyable ride with quiet roads and beautiful scenery. The hotels were varied and comfortable. We had the bad luck of rain on Days 3 and 4. In fact, we skipped the boat ride and took the train on Day 4 as the weather forecast was for a lot of rain. The rest of the time we had sunny weather and enjoyed the quiet rides through the countryside around Verona. Some of the rides were longer than we would have liked but having Electric Bikes made the rides a breeze!

    A Beautiful Ride Through Austria

    · Salzburg to Vienna, Lakes Option

This was a very well organized and well thought out way to experience the beautiful countryside between Salzburg and Vienna. When we entered the hotel in Salzburg to pick up our rented bicycles for our first day of riding we were greeted by a representative from the bicycle rental company. With our bicycles he provided us with a tire patch kit, basic tool kit, and hand pump but no tire levers. At my request he provided me with a spare inner tube which came in handy on the last day of our tour. The bicycles provided were well maintained and well suited for this tour. My wife used an e-bike whereas I used a 24 speed hybrid bicycle with a triple crankset giving me a wide range of gearing just in case it got hilly. The bicycles also came with a set of panniers and a small handlebar bag on one to carry the tour guidebooks. The guidebooks were customized for our specific tour providing good information on the sights to see along the way as well as maps to the specific hotels we were to stay at. Accommodations were good, mostly family owned and run with the exception of the hotels in Salzburg, Linz, and Vienna which were part of different hotel chains, e.g. Marriott. The hotels we stayed at provided good European breakfasts and excellent Austrian coffee. Our luggage was always available at the hotel when we arrived. I am 70 years old and have toured by bicycle extensively throughout the United Staes since my teenage years but I found this tour far more enjoyable since the route we took was mostly on paved or crushed stone bicycle paths without auto traffic to deal with (in the United States I have bicycled through many beautiful national and state parks but have always had to deal with automobile traffic making it more difficult to enjoy the natural splendor). However, there were times where we did need to ride with auto traffic in and near the cities. We also rode on some backroads and roads through neighborhoods that have very little auto traffic. Good bicycle path signage is present along Austria’s cycle paths, however, the provided bicycle tour guide books did not take advantage of this. I believe the guide books should have referred to this bike path signage (e.g., R2 or R4 or R6 or R15) and mention which to follow from one city or town to the next. Another challenge was that the bicycle rental company did not provide handle bar mounts for our smart phones meaning anytime we needed to check a GPS track we had to stop and pull out our phones from our pockets or bags. This became especially frustrating on rainy days. Please note I did attempt to purchase smart phone handlebar mounts at a couple of bike shops along the way but neither of them carried what I was looking for; next time I will be sure to be prepared and bring my own. Although we found the GPS tracks very useful, on some occasions there were times that the GPS tracks did not perfectly match with the bicycle path signage which led to a little confusion but this was easily resolved after checking Google Maps. However, we found the eight km stretch GPS track from Grein to the Schatz.Kammer Burg Kreuzen hotel to be grossly inadequate. Although the paved parts of this path were manageable, we ended up on some very steep and poorly maintained dirt and gravel roads that would have been manageable with a decent mountain bike with wide tires but not the bicycles we were using. A shuttle from Grein to the hotel was offered and that may have been the better option for this part of the ride. Another point about Schatz.Kammer Burg Kreuzen hotel is the available buffet dinner. The cost is about 25 euros per person and is cash only. It would have been nice to know that they did not accept credit cards for the buffet dinner and it what it cost. Fortunately I had enough cash in my wallet to cover this expense. On the last day of riding we past a Canadian couple we had chatted with at dinner a couple of nights before. They had a flat tire and did not know how to repair it nor did they have the necessary tools and spare inner tube to do so. They had called the bicycle tour company to ask for assistance but since it was a Sunday they were told they would have to find their own way to the next town for assistance. Fortunately I did have a spare inner tube and had brought my own set of bicycle tools (including tire levers) from home; the basic tools provided by the bicycle tour company would have been inadequate to facilitate this simple repair. I was able to replace the inner tube and get them back on their way toward Vienna. I mention this not so much as a negative but to remind those interested in such a tour to come prepared to manage such inconveniences. Overall, the experience was most enjoyable and the scenery amazing. I strongly recommend this tour for anyone that enjoys bicycle touring through very scenic mountain valleys and historic towns and along scenic lakes and rivers. I am thankful that biketours.com has vetted this tour and made it easy and affordable to experience. The personnel at biketours.com were very helpful with the booking of this tour and patiently answered all of my questions. I will definitely book future European bicycle tours through biketours.com.  SHOW MORE

    Nice ride. Two complaints.

    · Three Lakes Tour: From Geneva to Annecy

    1) The phone app didn't work at all (for three of us who tried). And the GPS they gave us as a backup is a decade outdated. Thank goodness for Google Maps, though that didn't always yield the most scenic routes.
    2) Too much time spent on bike routes that were really highway shoulders, with a bicycle silhouette stenciled on the asphalt.

Great hotels, fantastic food, (and priceless company we provided ourselves).

    Wonderful trip

    · Greece: The Peloponnese Peninsula

Pros: The perfect way to experience this part of Greece. The Greek people were very friendly.

Cons: One of the bikes broke down resulting in minor injury of one of the person in the group. When we were leaving the local tour company intents to claim us (without result) for the bike and driving the injured person to the nearmest hospital. The companys "clarification" for the claim for the bicycle was "careless" and/or "speedy" cycling even though we only followed the provided cycling routes. This resulted my in "one" star rate to the company. My "one" star has nothing to do with the people from the company that were wery helpful and nice. Regarding the bycicle I thougt such biking company would have its insurance to tackle such "incedent".

  • Mosel Bike Path
(4/5) Arnold and Elmari Botha 4 months ago

Wonderful experience in a scenic environment!

    · Mosel Bike Path: Dreamy Mosel Valley from Trier to Koblenz

    What was good:
    - The hotels were first class in terms of location, breakfast, cleanliness and facilities
    - The bicycles were in an excellent condition
    - The Mosel is almost too beautiful to be true, with the winding river, vines, castles and picturesque villages
    - The wine tasting was a very pleasant experience
    - The roads were mostly dedicated cycle paths, fairly flat and in a good condition
    - The Rhine cruise was a nice bonus

Where the tour can be improved upon:
    - The instructions and directions for the Rhine cruise was totally absent - we did not know where to go
    - The location of the wine tasting was also a bit obscure and hidden in the fine print
    - We received vouchers for Trier but did not know what they were for and we arrived too late to use them
    - The directions were not always clear and we got lost a few times (eg on Day 1 the notes say "You'll find the Hotel Moselblick here", but in fact one should take a turn-off BEFORE the hotel.)
    - The road works in Trier also confused us and it took us an extra hour to find the right path. (We met other cyclists who were confused as well)
    - Most of the coffee shops and restaurants in the smaller towns were closed in the afternoon, which was disappointing and threw our plans in disarray!
    - On Day 2 our luggage only arrived at the hotel after 6 pm despite it being a short route. As a result we had to attend the wine tasting in our cycling clothes.
    - On Day 4 I cramped badly and phoned the Service Hotline to be picked up and taken to the hotel, but we were told that Pedalo does not provide that service, despite promises in the upfront communication that it does. What would have happened if one of us fell badly and broke an arm or damaged the bicycle, or if a torrential thunderstorm broke out? Surely there must be a rescue vehicle on stand-by?
    - The info pack was insufficient in the absence of a personal briefing session

Despite these points, it was a wonderful experience (albeit a bit expensive) and we would recommend it strongly to couples, families or friends.

Just a warning: Although I was reasonably fit and an experienced cyclist, I suffered on the long days. Cycling 60+ kilometers on normal touring bicycles is not a trivial exercise (especially in wind or rain), so please come prepared with properly padded cycling shorts, hydrate frequently, and get e-bikes if possible.

Excellent for the most part. Some issues with the boat. 1) Our cabin air conditioning did not consistently work. 2) We shouldn't have to pay for water at meal time. 3) Our group wasn't allowed to change tables at dinner which is something we would have liked to do since we were a group of 40.
