  • Experience the unforgettable in Washington DC
    (4/5) Claudia Hodkinson May 1, 2023

A relaxed and fun way to explore the iconic monuments of DC!

    · Washington DC Monuments & Memorials Bike Tour

This was a well-organized tour with informative guides. Biking from one monument to the next by bike was a really fun way to get around and see the sites easily and quickly. At each spot, we were given enough time to explore the monuments on foot . Biking was easy and bikes were in good condition. A great experience.

Monuments & Memorials Tour it is!

    · Washington DC Monuments & Memorials Bike Tour

This is a great tour! You will definitely see many monuments and memorials, some of which I didn’t even know existed, and I’ve travel to DC quite a bit. There’s not a lot of biking on this tour, so if you’re looking for a real work out, this isn’t it, but it is great to do with families – smaller children, grandmas and grandpas etc. Highly recommend! Our guides, Eric B and Josh were amazing!!

The Perfect Way to Explore DC!

    · Washington DC Monuments & Memorials Bike Tour

After visiting DC a few times on foot, this time I went by bike. This is truly the best way to get from monument to monument! The time you save by not walking is spent getting a small history lesson and an in depth view of each location. Our guides were wonderful and very knowledgeable! I only wish that there were more focus on the history of each stop.

The biking itself was minimal, almost entirely on bike paths, and can be done easily by beginner cyclists. There are some spots where you must cross the road and be aware of traffic, however.

Even though a lot of the monuments are currently under spring cleaning and construction, I had a great time on this adventure! We had good weather, fun guides and comfortable bikes! If you take a trip to DC, you'll have to make time for this excursion!

    The ideal sightseeing experience

    · Washington DC Monuments & Memorials Bike Tour

Coming from the UK, I'd seen the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, National Mall etc on the TV and I knew I had to see these places in person one day. I was so glad and appreciative to find a tour that took me to the best of Washington DC in just a few hours - I could tick all these sights off my travel list, and there really was no comparison between seeing pictures and standing right there on the steps with Lincoln looming above me.

Our guides Josh and Eric B were very knowledgeable and had a relaxed manner that was easy to engage with. I learned a lot of interesting facts at each site and was grateful for a compact introduction before being given time to independently explore the monuments. The tour was paced so you didn't feel rushed like you sometimes can do - the guides looked after our bikes and I was able to read every quote at the FDR memorial, which was my favourite. The guides were also great for stopping so I could grab a bottle of water mid-ride.

Overall, this was a really atmospheric ride that was equal parts educational and engaging. Also to add is that the bike was really good quality (Cannondale) with a pouch for storing your phone so there was no fear of it slipping out of my pocket. I kept the bike until the evening, so I was able to extend my trip with a cycle to Alexandria which took me past the Pentagon with planes from the Reagan Airport soaring overhead.

I'd recommend this trip to anyone who wants to see the best of DC without tiring themselves with long walks between the monuments.

Great way to easily see many memorials and monuments!

    · Washington DC Monuments & Memorials Bike Tour

This tour was a great way to see the monuments and memorials in DC. It was quick and easy to bike between the different tour stops and saved so much time compared to walking. At each stop, our guides took time to discuss the history behind the memorial and then allowed time to explore independently.
The biking was very easy, even with a few road intersections and some pedestrian traffic around the more popular monuments.
I would highly recommend this tour to anyone exploring the area. I imagine it is even more lovely at night with all the lighting on the monuments!

A really great way to visit the monuments!

    · Washington DC Monuments & Memorials Bike Tour

I've been to DC a few times but this was by far the best experience. Cycling is such an effective and FUN way to explore the monuments and memorials. The guides were really knowledgeable and gave us a lot of interesting facts at each stop. We had a large group and I think splitting into two smaller groups would have made it even more enjoyable.

  • Dolomites to Venice
    (4/5) Mickey Shnaiderman October 4, 2023

    An almost perfect tour

    · Dolomites to Venice Along the Old Dolomites Railway Track

A very unusual and exciting way to explore to Dolomites. Riding the bicycle through the those magnificent views was truly astounding.
The routes were picked correctly both in terms of distance and terrain.
Also, the provided booklet with the brief information about the routes and food recommendation was great!
All the hotels were great with excellent service, breakfasts were good and had us full until arrival.
The bicycles were good too, although we would expect to have some help adjusting them to our sizes. My girlfriend is very short and we had to find a multi-tool to adjust her saddle horizontal position. If we had all the tools supplied, it would be much easier.
We also had one miscommunication: one of the hotels was changed, so we got the updated list of hotels before the beginning of the tour. Upon arrival, we got all the maps and another list of hotels. This printed list stated that all previous lists were invalid, so we took it for granted. At the second day of riding, which was the longest and the hardest, we arrived exhausted to the wrong hotel, only to realize we have 3 more kilometres to ride to a hotel outside the city. That, in turn, meant that we were left with only one dinner option - in the hotel itself. It was great, though, but quite expensive.
The navigation was a bit tricky too. The app is a bit primitive, sometimes got stuck, drained a lot of battery when navigating with the screen on (compared to Google Maps that takes much less battery). In one occasion it also got my phone so hot it had to shut down. In some several places the app tried to take us on to non existent roads or onto incoming traffic. It was also unaware of road constructions. Other than that, when getting the hang of this app, it wasn't that bad. We managed to find our way without too much of a hustle.
A tip to give to other riders next time: Venice has a secured parking spot for bicycles for a 10€ per bicycles. It is essentially a huge locker for the bike. Also, a big shout-out for Anthony, who called us to help finding the return place of the bikes. He also gave us the tip of riding to Venice and then leaving them in the hotel inserted of in the garage.

Good trip - lots of orchards and vineyards

    · Innsbruck to Lake Garda Across the Southern Slopes of the Alps

I enjoyed this trip through the Dolomites but didn’t see as much of the craggy Dolomites as I expected. We were almost always in the flat valley with the mountains along the side of the valley. As we went south the mountains seemed to shrink. I enjoyed the Germanic nature of northern Italy and was very interested to learn more about its history and how Austrian the residents still feel. It didn’t feel like we were in Italy until we arrived in Trento on market day. And then it was almost like a switch flipped and we were in Italy. The architecture as well as the countryside changed and became more Mediterranean influenced. Our ride was generally on bike paths that were very busy with cyclists. Weekends were especially busy but even during the week the paths were busy but it was great to see so many people out riding their bikes. Along the paths we found several bike bars that served drinks and snacks to cyclists and they were perfect places to find a WC. We enjoyed the scenery and marveled at the thousands of acres of apple orchards that we rode through. The hotels were generally fine but the hotel in Riva del Garda was a disappointment. I paid extra for single rooms after a friend had to cancel her trip and this room was a real disappointment, it was more like a cell.

Great to have one hotel as a home base

    · Lake Garda (Based in One Hotel)

Lake Garda was beautiful and we enjoyed staying in Desenzano. Our hotel in Desenzano was in the perfect location, right on the water and close enough to the old town to walk to dinner.

The day trips for biking out of Desenzano were variable in terms of how much we enjoyed them. We really liked Verona but the biking back from Verona was not very enjoyable because of the traffic and a lot of not very scenic areas. However, the day we rode to Brescia, another city, was a good biking day as the route we were on had pretty good cycling infrastructure that kept us separated from cars even though we were entering the city. There was, however, on that day a closed road that we had to navigate around. Luckily with both google maps and ride with gps we were able to find a good alternate route to get around the closure. We used rides with gps to navigate the routes provided by the tour company rather than their app as rides with gps allowed us to enter our individual hotel and ride directly there. It was also better with turn by turn directions. The tour literature said that their app would work on airplane mode if you downloaded the maps ahead of time, we didn’t find that to be the case. Also, their app tended to lose where we were while rides with gps did not lose us.

Our favorite riding day was the day we rode a loop route in the countryside without a city destination. Lots of nice scenic views without having to negotiate city traffic.

One day I had a problem with my e-bike, it wouldn’t change power levels, so I called the emergency number and they wanted me to call the guy who manages the bikes but since we were out on the tour I asked if she could call him for me. She said she would and that he would call me back. He never called back. The next day one of our group decided not to ride so I used her bike. However, there were several other bikes that had been delivered. I called the emergency number again later that day to say that I had not gotten a call back but that several bikes had been delivered and was one of them for me. She didn’t know but again told me to call the guy who manages the bikes. This time I did call him and he seemed to imply that the bike that said reserved was for me. We had a little bit of a language barrier. So, the next day I rode the reserved bike and all was good. All of that to say it would be great if the tour company could work on their communication with customers. The replacement bike for me was apparently there the morning after I called but I didn’t know that.

All in all it was a good trip and we saw some wonderful sites from Lake Garda to Verona to Brescia and in the countryside.

    Lovely towns along the Mosel

    · · German Wine Country along the Saar & Mosel Rivers

We really enjoyed our trip down the Mosel and Saar rivers. The Zwaan is a great boat and we really enjoyed the bike tour with a small group. Lots of storybook villages to explore along the way. We were lucky to be there while the grapes along the Mosel were being harvested and it was really interesting to see that going on. We also had the opportunity to try Federweißer, fresh pressed wine. It was very good while being totally different from what you think of as wine. We had e-bikes for the trip which flattened out the hills and made the riding very easy. It was very interesting to see all of the remnants of Roman civilization as well as lots of medieval buildings. So much history. The patchwork quilt of vineyards along the river were amazing especially in some areas where it seemed they rose straight up. So difficult to work on those steep slopes.

    (4/5) Cati C October 5, 2023

    Incredible trip, but expensive

    · Split to Dubrovnik: The Islands and Coastline of Croatia

Croatia is without an ounce of doubt one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Biking the islands exceeded every expectation - pristine blue waters, olive and grape vineyards + tasting, beautiful stone villages. It was all wonderful. Our hotels in Hvar and Korcula were also outstanding.

That said, I do not know why this tour is so much more expensive than every other tour offered on this site. Two of our three hotels were excellent, and they do provide boat transfers; however, our hotel in Split (the first two nights) was very mediocre, and most boat transfers are cheap ferry rides. Also, this trip is 6 days long. On Day 1, there is a short option to cycle on Split (12km). On Day 5, there is again a short option to cycle on Korcula island. On Day 6, there is no cycling and they do not include accommodations in Dubrovnik (so, it seems odd that this day is included in the price calculation). I have done other cycling tours that include significantly more cycling/lodging for a fraction of the cost. I am not someone who needs to bike 60+ km a day, but I do think the value of this tour did not match the cost. It would be increased if they included one more cycling day (either on Mljet island or near Dubrovnik on the mainland) and lodging on the last day.

  • Best of Slovenia
    (4/5) Barbara October 8, 2023

Beautiful country with lots to see and do

    · Best of Slovenia: Highlights Across the Country From Bled to Piran

Slovenia ranks as one of my favorite countries to cycle. Friendly, hard working people. Roads are in great condition ( minus a few construction zones due to recent flooding), and the routes offered are interesting and varied. From high mountain vistas and zigzagging descents to flat bike trails along the sea, each day brought a new adventure to the senses. We enjoyed getting off the bikes to explore caves, castles, waterfalls, and towns. Most of us opted to cycle and climb the first day to the high plateau of Pokljuka. It actually seemed like an easier climb than the second day to the high plateau of Jelovica. Two people used the shuttle the first day and were not particularly pleased at where they were let off on the route. Had they known better, they would have also cycled to Pokljuka with us. (they were on electric bikes).

The hotels were good. Regardless of the size of rooms, the beds were comfortable and the breakfasts were bountiful and varied. The hotel in Ljubljana was a 45 minute walk to the city center, but it allows one to see the sites and restaurants along the way. We downloaded the maps on our devices and they were adequate for navigation. It was helpful to have 3 navigators in our group of 8 people.

Bikes that we used were hybrid ones. They were a definite plus with all the climbing involved with this tour. Sometimes, the small towns we entered had short ascents of 10-12% grade, so it was helpful to have the low gears to pop into. There were a few problems with the bikes. One of the hybrids was not in good condition for riding and was replaced before we started our tour. It was helpful to have the bikes at the hotel the night before ( Day 1) so we could adjust and test ride the bikes. The one electric bike had a problem the first day while riding the hills. It was discovered that a sensory cable was not connected after going to a local bike shop to have it looked at after the second day of riding.

Bike Tours, the company, there were some problems with communication regarding bike choices. There were problems with obtaining the bikes that were unnecessarily stressful. Overall, they were good enough to use, and eventually the issues were resolved. Also, I'm not a big fan of putting a 75% deposit down 9 months before the tour date which is unusual from the other 6 self guided tours that I've done. Make sure to read the fine print regarding the tour. Extra luggage other than one piece is charged extra. Also, we opted to find our own transport options to and from airports/towns, which were cheaper than what is offered. Staying a night in Kranj after our arrival from Ljubljana airport, before going the next day to Bled, worked out wonderfully.

Discovering the Best of Slovenia was a treat. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is adventurous and curious. The food, the culture, the people, and the sites were incredible!  SHOW MORE

    Wonderful trip!

    · · The Istrian Peninsula by Electric Bike

Explored the Istrian Peninsula by day while relaxing on the wonderful Andela Lora at night. Pro tip: Don't book a lesser boat! Staff was very attentive. Guide Yana was a delight with her bubbly enthusiasm. Appreciated many costal ports as well as old historic inland villages. Would have appreciated the opportunity to for upgraded bikes and more food variety. The booking process was smooth and we would defiantly go with BikeTours.com again!

    Fantastic riding

    · Dordogne Valley: Between the Dordogne and Lot Rivers

Dordogne was beautiful. The limestone cliffs, valley views, and rolling hills (e-bike made that much more enjoyable) were gorgeous. The small villages and countless chateaus were a treat. The weather was great as was our friendly guide who took good care of us. Our guide was not French-speaking, as we had hoped, though. The biggest disappointment was there was only 1 other guest on the tour (which was better than no other guest which is what we were told 2 weeks before the start) . The upside was flexibility and the ability to see more (loved the side visits, especially the Padirac caves) and not have dinners taking hours on end. The dinners were all 5 star affairs. The lodging was not the highest end (mostly 2-3 stars), but we didn’t sign up for that. Overall, it was a great trip.

    Amazing Croatia

    · Split to Dubrovnik: The Islands and Coastline of Croatia

The tour was very well organized.
Our operator explained everything perfectly, and we felt very safe, even doing our first bike tour and going by ourselves.
The climate, views, and places we visited were terrific.
Everything was perfect but the hotels. Some were very old and had tiny rooms, challenging to rest and relax after a day-long journey.
But in the end, the balance was super positive
