First Bike Trip for us. Was wonderful.

Innsbruck to Salzburg: Through the Alps Along River Cycle Trails

We loved Austria and biking on this route was great. The route is very well designed. We took traditional bikes and it was no problem at all. We wished it could have lasted longer with another segment. We were very lucky with the weather in September as it was sunny our entire journey but had rain when we arrived and on the day we departed.

Bike rental shop, equipment and all hotels were top notch!

Mountain valleys, forests, meadows, pastures, and rivers

Innsbruck to Salzburg: Through the Alps Along River Cycle Trails

I believe this has been our 4th trip with BikeTours.com, and this might be the best one yet. If you’re looking for a pleasant ride through a lush green countryside, and generally cool weather (and can tolerate a rainstorm or two), Austria is an ideal place for biking, and this particular tour is one of the very best. This trip was actually a little easier on the legs (we only use “real” bikes!) than the other Level 2 trips we’ve taken, and the overall vibe and scenery were just what we were looking for. While we enjoy the bigger cities of Innsbruck and Salzburg, what we love best are the trails through the countryside, with a nice village every 10 miles or so for a break and a bit of Apfelstrudel. Austrians are so friendly to tourists that it’s simply a delight to be here. The cool weather and lush green vegetation everywhere are a big plus, particularly if you come from a drier climate like we do. We navigated with the provided .gpx file using Google maps. Best navigation experience by far!

This was the best of my Four European Bike Tours

Innsbruck to Salzburg: Through the Alps Along River Cycle Trails

We traveled in late-August to early-September of 2025. The scenery was more stunning than I imagined it would be and the weather was perfect nearly every day; sunny skies, mild temperatures, and cool nights. (Most European hotels do not have AC so cool nights were a real blessing.)

Our e-bikes were in excellent condition and all of them worked flawlessly during the entire trip.

The breakfast's were hearty meals including meats, cheeses, eggs, yogurt, fruit, juice, coffee, and some pastries.

Some thoughts about the cycling. Using a GPS app to map your day's ride is critically important if you do not want to get lost. Austria is full of biking and hiking trails so it is very easy to take the wrong trail at trail intersections. We used Garmin's Explore app to navigate the biking trails and it worked really well. (A link with the GPS coordinates will be provided by the touring company.) On a related note, Google Maps worked much better in Europe than Apple's Maps app when walking around towns and villages.

The paper maps provided by the touring company are nearly impossible to follow while riding but they do have a benefit. The night before each day's ride--after studying the map--we would make notes indicating the distance to select villages, bridges, lakes, and intersections, etc. (The maps provide these distances.) Our notes then served as our sign posts ensuring that were were on the correct road or trail during the next day's ride, and also plan our lunch stops.

Though this was not explained in any of the literature I read, at every hotel we stayed we were given a two day "summer card" ("Sommerkarte") free of charge. (We did have to ask for it at one hotel.) These cards are incredible deals. They allow for FREE transportation on local and regional buses and trains, and also provide free admission to select museums, free rides on the Schmittenhohe Cable Cars in Zell am See, and free access to the water falls in Krimml. Not sure why an explanation of this tremendous benefit was not provided.

Just for clarification, the "taxi" that you catch at the train station in Zell am Ziller is a large passenger van pulling a trailer. Your bikes are loaded into the trailer and then everyone piles into the van for a breathtaking 45-minute ride to Krimml. (Your luggage will be in the van as well.) By the way, the bike ride to Zell am Ziller is less than 15 miles and the village is beautiful so I would recommend getting there before noon and then having lunch at one of the restaurants along the river before catching your "taxi" to Krimml that afternoon.

    Our favorite activities:
Schmittenhohe Cable Cars in Zell am See- Use your summer card to catch the bus to the cable car facility and then ride to the top of the mountains where you can hike trails and have lunch. The views from the mountain tops are stunning.
Water Fall at Krimml- Again, use your summer card to access that water fall. You can walk up to the base of the waterfall and/or walk up the trail that leads to the top of the falls. There are lookouts about every 200 feet of elevation gain.
The Schloss Tratzberg Castle in Jenbach- It's probably a 10-mile detour on your first day, and somewhat expensive (summer cards do not work there), but well worth it. I believe this is one of the best preserved castles in the world. The current owner of the castle accompanied our tour (we were the last tour of the day) and he embellished much of the narrative provided by our guide.
The Family Gundolf Dinner Show in Innsbruck- A quirky Austrian variety show that includes dinner and a beer. It's kind of a Lawrence Welk meets Hee-Haw fusion for those old enough to remember those programs.
Salzburg- I only mention it because the reviews I read of Salzburg before our trip suggested it was kind of a one-dimensional city. ("Sound of Music.") It was much nicer than I anticipated with many shops, delicious restaurants, and one fascinating "speak easy" bar called Burdoch's Punch and Cocktails. At Burdoch's, you tell the bartender the name of a drink you like and then she creates a similar alternative using all sorts of random ingredients. I like "French 75's"; she made me something that was even better. The bartender and waiters were also excellent conversationalists.  SHOW MORE

    Alpine cycle paths in Austria

Innsbruck to Salzburg: Through the Alps Along River Cycle Trails

We had a great week cycling through Austria. The bikes were in great condition. The bike shop was very accommodating and switched out the handlebar stem to make the bike more comfortable. We found the self-guided navigation easier than on past trips because we downloaded the routes provided to a cycling app on our phones. Family-run hotels in the overnight villages were all nice, however the breakfast at the second hotel in Strasse was disappointing.

The Best Way to Experience the Countryside Between Innsbruck and Vienna

Innsbruck to Salzburg: Through the Alps Along River Cycle Trails

This was a very well organized and well thought out way to experience the beautiful countryside between Innsbruck and Vienna. Chris at the bicycle rental shop in Innsbruck was very helpful and provided us with handlebar mounts for our phones to easily view GPS tracks, bicycle repair tools (including tire levers, spare inner tube, patch kit, hand pump, and CO2 inflator) and lock and pannier bags. Bicycles have been well maintained and were well suited for this tour. My wife used an e-bike whereas I used a 24 speed hybrid bicycle with a triple crankset giving me a wide range of gearing just in case it got hilly. Accommodations were good, mostly lodging facilities intended for winter skiing, with very good European breakfasts and excellent Austrian coffee. Our luggage was always available at the hotel when we arrived. I am 70 years old and have toured by bicycle throughout the United Staes since my teenage years but I found this tour far more enjoyable since the route we took was mostly on paved or crushed stone bicycle paths without auto traffic to deal with (in the United States I have bicycled through many beautiful national and state parks but have always had to deal with automobile traffic making it more difficult to enjoy the natural beauty). On this tour there are a few miles (but only a few miles) where we did need to ride with auto traffic in the cities. There are also some backroads and roads through neighborhoods that have very little auto traffic. There were a few very minor hiccups with the GPS tracks and the bicycle path signage. Although we found the GPS tracks very useful, on very rare occasion there were times that the GPS tracks did not perfectly match with the bicycle path signage which led to a little confusion but this was easily resolved after checking Google Maps. It was great that a shuttle was provided from Zell am Ziller to Krimml since the highway between these two towns is fairly steep and narrow with lots of auto traffic. The shuttle also got us to Krimml in time for us to hike up to the Krimml waterfalls. It was also nice that the shuttle took us to a higher elevation which resulted in a down hill coast on our bicycles the next morning. We were fortunate to have a layover day in Zell am See since it was the only day to rain on this tour. Although we are comfortable riding in the rain it is something we like to avoid which can be challenging to do in Austria. There were also a couple of minor hiccups with our lodging but these were quickly resolved by a phone call to Helmut Wagner, the bicycle tour operator. When we arrived at the hotel in Zell am See there was no one at the reception desk and we later found out we needed to go to the hotel next door to check in. When we arrived in at the hotel in Salzburg we were told by the reception personnel that we would need to pay for our room but again a phone call to Helmut Wagner quickly resolved this issue. I mention these minor inconveniences so one is prepared to be flexible and not to panic since these issues are easily resolved. Overall, the experience was most enjoyable and the scenery amazing. I strongly recommend this tour for anyone that enjoys bicycle touring through very scenic mountain valleys and historic towns. I am thankful that biketours.com has vetted this tour and made it easy and affordable to experience. The personnel at biketours.com were very helpful with the booking of this tour and patiently answered all of my questions. I will definitely book future European bicycle tours through biketours.com.  SHOW MORE

    Post college graduation trip

Innsbruck to Salzburg: Through the Alps Along River Cycle Trails

This was a fantastic trip for two families - one had prior bike trip experience and one was new to the bike tour world. We flew into Munich and spent a day exploring prior to training to Innsbruck. We were super fortunate with the weather as it had snowed in Innsbruck the week prior but we had a full week of sun with only a few showers on the rest day in Zell am See. Picking up the bikes in Innsbruck was easy - Chris at Crazybikez made sure that everyone had a good fit and provided us with the repair kit. The bikes are touring bikes - comfortable, but nothing speedy. I wouldn't want to try and climb hills for extended periods with them. Aside from a single flat on the last day, they performed admirably. When you check in at the hotel, the group was usually listed as BestSeller Reiser instead of the family name. All the hotels were enjoyable with easy bike storage, yummy breakfast, and the luggage transfer went off without incident. At each hotel, expect to pay a per person tourism tax - usually about 4 euro per person. I strongly encourage using the provided GPS routes as opposed to the guidebook for active routing, but the book does provide some information for interesting side trips. Chris told us to visit the town of Hall the first day and the Swarovski Crystal Museum. Take the time to ride up to Mayrhofen on day 2 prior to the transfer from Zell am Ziller to Krimml. The gorges and cave between Zell am See and Lofer were fun to explore. Make sure to take advantage of the various SummerCards that the hotels will provide. In Krimml it gets you into the waterfalls, in Zell am See - the boat tour, gondola to the top of the ski area, and the beach park, in Lofer - the gondola. The extra day in Zell am See is well worth it. We also spent an extra day at the end to explore Salzburg before taking the train back to Munich. We never had to reach out to the local support but the guidebook packets were received at the hotel in Innsbruck provided us with contact information if needed. I would definitely use biketours.com again

Wonderful way to visit the shores of the Bodensee . . .

    Lake Constance Bicycle Path

We like to book tours in September, but weather can be a concern. We selected the 11-day Bodensee tour and only experienced two days of wet weather! The paths were well marked, the hotels comfortable and well-situated, the daily program manageable, the museum pass wonderful, and the meals and Apfelstrüdel delicious. As two 70+ cyclers, this trip was by far the easiest we have done!

    Spectacular scenery and towns

    Cycling the West Balkan Triangle

West Balkan Triangle; Epic Croatia through Biketours.com
Bottom Line: Fabulous Tour. Great Scenery. Very nice hotels and food. Friendly people. You had better be extremely fit if you are not riding an e-bike. 190 miles and over 11,000 feet of climbing. With an e-bike, no problem.
Guides: Alex and Alex (Juro). Fantastic guys. Focused on fun and safety. Very accommodating. We loved them. Great fun and professional.
Bikes: Marvelous e-bikes. Makes the tour possible for many. Powerful and great range. Road bikes a bit dated but light. Rim brakes. 23mm tires. 52/36 11-28T gearing not great for 7 kilometer 7 to 10% climbs. (And the climbs are frequent) Tough to spin.
Routes: Well planned. Some beautiful remote and coastal areas. Some heavy traffic in Hercog Novi area can be a bit intimidating for some. Most areas traffic not an issue. Overnight cities were charming.

    No regrets!

    Cycling the West Balkan Triangle

We thoroughly enjoyed this trip. The scenery along the coastline and inland was spectacular. We enjoyed riding the ascents and descents but were glad we decided to rent e-bikes. Some of the climbs are challenging.
Our guides ( Alex and Alex) were excellent. They were helpful, informative and kind.
We enjoyed the variety of accommodations along the way - each one unique. The lunches were good- usually very local which we enjoyed.
The only downside comment we have is that several times we had to ride on roads that were heavily trafficked with trucks and cars. This wasn’t a surprise but just rather unpleasant. We realized that it was necessary in order to get to some of the less traveled roads and beautiful scenery.

    The fascinating Balkans on bike

    Cycling the West Balkan Triangle

We thoroughly enjoyed our introduction to cycling the Balkans. Dubrovnik was a perfect gathering point. We stayed an extra day to explore and were glad we did. Cycling the hills was challenging for those on road bikes; the views were magnificent. The Adriatic was magical and occasionally confined traffic requiring extra caution. Our guides, Alex and Alex, were competent, hardworking, and especially helpful, answering questions and showing us aspects of these countries we would never would have found on our own. There were 14 of us on the tour from ALL OVER, and getting to know them all over the course of the tour was part of the fun. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

    An epic trip!

    Cycling the West Balkan Triangle

It was our first bike trip (10/5/24 to 10/12/24) and exceeded our expectations on every level. It all felt seamless, from the ease of booking our guided tour through to the final transfer to the airport. The itinerary was well planned and each destination was captivating. The accommodations were very comfortable and charming. Our two guides, Alex and Alex (Juro) were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They went above and beyond in every way to make the journey especially memorable. Finally, the cost of this trip was reasonable compared to other operators offering similar tours. Will recommend this to anyone. Dave Hajra

    Life Changing!

    Cycling the West Balkan Triangle

This trip will change how we vacation in the future!

There were 6 of us in our group, 5 on e-bikes, and 1 on a rode bike. We joined another group of 6 upon our arrival. Our guide Alex (Juro) provided us with a daily overview of the places we would be visiting and the terrain we would be covering. Our other guide was also Alex who followed behind the group in a van with our luggage and snacks. Together they helped to make the trip. They took our safety very seriously and shares some stories along the way of the places we were visiting. They were both engaging and worked hard to enhance our experience.

The ride covered all different types of terrain. We went on main roads, back quiet streets, flat roads, and covered grades as a steep as 12%. On an e-bike you took the hills at your own pace going both up and down. Juro would help guide the group, so we stayed together, and regrouped as needed. The important thing we all learned was to take time to enjoy the journey.

We stayed in lots of amazing places ranging from larger hotels to quaint 7 room hotels. The food and wine were wonderful everywhere we went, and the locals were so friendly. Lots of people spoke English and those who didn’t, Juro or Alex help as our interpreter.

The views were stunning. The pictures can’t begin to capture the breathtaking views of the mountains or along the sea. We were able to stop along the ride to take picture and Juro helped to make recommendations on where to stop for the best pictures.

The trip left us all wanting more. We agreed this trip changed how we want to vacation and explore other countries. We are already planning our next trip. Thank you to Juro, Alex, and BikeTours.com for a life changing experience.

    Excellent Tour

    Cycling the West Balkan Triangle

This was a great trip. We've previously done all tours DIY. I enjoyed not having to think about navigation, most of the meals, etc. Our guide was very knowledgeable. I enjoyed stopping for sites of historical significance, a winery, an olive farm, an others. I liked that we had a variety of scenery including the coast, mountains, along lakes. Some of it felt wonderfully remote.
I consider myself a moderate rider (50-70 miles per week, elevation gain 3000-4000 ft per week) and did it on a non-ebike. Some parts pushed me but not to the extreme. We had a inexperienced rider who completed it on an e-bike with some effort, the rest of the group were experienced and did it on e-bikes without problems
I would say that a small portion of it was on a busy road. If you are not experienced with sharing the road during those times it might be intimidating but I felt comfortable. You have the option of sitting out ANY portion you are not comfortable with.
Breaks are frequent, at least 2 per day, usually 3 per day so it is manageable. Our guide did a good job of letting us go at our own pace which varied significantly. The SAG person was great about attending to any concerns about water, snacks, etc. needed along the way.
All of the lodging was comfortable and clean but not necessarily luxurious if that is important to you. Some of the lodging was 1-2 km from sites of interest in the evening (say old town) but it was walkable. Also, there were always options very close for evening dining if chose to stay close.
I have no regrets, was a good experience and would recommend it.

    It met my expectations.

    Cycling the West Balkan Triangle

The chosen route was well designed, and both the guide and the support driver did a great job leading the group, clearly explaining the route in advance every day and prioritizing the group’s safety and comfort. The route's duration and difficulty level are suitable for well-trained road cyclists, though there is always the option to ride with an e-bike.
The organization should pay closer attention to the standard of the hotels. While some exceeded expectations in terms of accommodations and service—such as Hotel Perla—others should be removed from the hotel offering, such as Hotel Marija 2.

    A brilliant tour

    Cycling the West Balkan Triangle

We had a fabulous tour with Alex our tour leader doing a great job as our guide while Gari was a terrific back up driver. Both were extremely helpful and good company. We used electric bikes and are glad we did as there are many steep hill climbs and descents on this tour. The scenery is wonderful and travelling through three countries was a real treat. We arranged a rest day in Kotor which was a wonderful break in a very lovely setting. The scenery along the whole route, perhaps particularly in Montenegro and Croatia, is stunning and the tour took us on many interesting and good roads, and, while there were occasional very busy roads, Alex and Gary managed our passage extremely well. The meals provided, especially the lunches, were terrific and much better than I had anticipated, with different places selected including a winery, olive grove and standout cevapi restaurant in Bosnia.

Good biking, great people, excellent food

    Cycling the West Balkan Triangle

This tour exceeded my expectations which were quite high. One note for flat land bikers - there are some serious ascents on this trail ex. Day 1 was 38 miles with 3,400 foot climb. So consider an e-bike or at minimum a road bike. First two days were good but days 3 through 6 were amazing. Accommodations were a solid 3 to 4 star with stays mainly along the coast, in historic old towns or in mountain villages. Alex, a former professional bike racer, challenged the group to get the most out of every day. Luka in the trail van was an excellent provider and always there when you needed something. Breakfast and lunch is included everyday of the tour. Lunches were exceptional on days 3, 4, 5 and 6. I never tired of biking along the Adriatic coast with stunning views on most days. I have no hesitation in recommending this trip. You will not regret it.

    my bucket list

    Split to Dalmatian Islands

Just a wonderful way to see Croatia and it's islands! We highly recommend the self guided tour for people who want to explore independently yet don't have a lot of time to spend organizing ferries/schedules. It's all done for you...all you do is pick up your bike and start riding!
