Forests, Festivals & Fairytale Castles

Germany is a country of deep contrasts, from its trend-setting capital, Berlin, to its cities of incredible cultural and artistic heritage, such as Munich and Cologne.

Known for its incredible cycling infrastructure and diverse landscapes, a bike tour of Germany could take you to the enchanting Neuschwanstein Castle, the vineyards of the Rhine Valley, the forests of the Bavarian Alps, the half-timbered houses of the Mosel Valley, or further afield to Lake Constance, the Baltic Coast, and the Black Forest.

With over 70,000 km of marked bike trails and an inexhaustible variety of cultural traditions to explore (think Oktoberfest, Lederhosen, vineyards, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites), Germany is a fascinating, scenic, and memorable cycling destination.

  • What makes Germany a great destination for a bike tour?

With its abundant rivers, valleys, and mountains, it’s no surprise that Germany is a top cycling destination. Explore some of the 70,000 km of bike paths, either meandering along a river, through historic cities, or through rolling hills.

Germany’s cities are surrounded by a wealth of pristine landscapes just waiting to be explored by bike. In the north, you'll find coastal terrain along the Baltic Sea. Southern Germany’s Bavaria region features the snow-tipped Alps, the Black Forest, and the Danube River.

  • When is the best time to take a bike tour in Germany?

The best time for a cycle tour in Germany is May to September.

In May and June, you'll enjoy countryside and vineyards coming into full bloom, also finding that the Mosel, Rhine, and Danube routes are less crowded than in the peak summer months.

In July and August, the days are longer and at their sunniest, with many beer gardens and festivals full of life.

In September, the countryside will start to glow in autumn colors. This cooler month is great for vineyard tours, and you'll find fewer crowds.

  • Are Germany bike tours suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. Germany is renowned for its world-class cycling infrastructure, with safe, well-marked paths. In fact, it is one of the most beginner-friendly European countries for cycling tours!

There are many different kinds of terrain in Germany (see route descriptions), but the majority of tours follow flat paths through river valleys with a few gentle hills. Mountainous climbs are available for more ambitious riders.
