Charming churches and coursing canals

Ride along the walkways and wharfs of Utrecht on this guided bike tour, visiting all the best sightseeing spots of this distinguished Dutch city. Start this city tour at the Dom Church and Tower, cycle on past some of the city’s many other churches, along the canals before stopping at the Miffy Museum, and finally at a local cafe to soak up some Dutch coffee culture.

You'll begin this bike tour at the Dom Tower, which stands over 112 meters tall and is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. The Dom Church, located next to the tower, is also the largest church in the Netherlands and an impressive example of Gothic architecture. Your guide will explain the role of these monumental buildings in the Netherlands’ ecclesiastical history, and you may get to visit the peaceful garden within the church’s cloisters, where fragrant herbs and lavender plants form a tranquil oasis in the middle of the city.

Ride on towards Utrecht's network of waterways, past the bustling wharfs and cellars that line these canals. Your guide will bring the history of these waterways alive by explaining how they were used for transportation, defense, and trade, and played a crucial role in the development of the Netherlands. The canal system also lends Utrecht its unique charm, and today provides a beautiful backdrop for the waterside terraces and restaurants that are built in the former wharfs and cellars. Sitting in the sunshine at the canal's edge is a huge part of local culture for the city’s residents, and your guide can point out the best waterside spots for coffee or lunch.

Utrecht is sometimes referred to as the 'City of Churches', and it's not hard to see why. There are over ten churches in the city center alone, and cycling around, your guide will explain the role these buildings played in shaping Utrecht, and Holland's, history. Riding among these contemplative, distinguished buildings on your city tour, you'll notice how they add to the peaceful ambiance and gentle pace of life in Utrecht. The city also boasts an abundance of green spaces, parks, and bike paths, making it an ideal destination for cyclists, and anyone who wants to unwind and connect with nature, as a great alternative to busier Dutch cities, like Amsterdam.

This family-friendly guided tour will also stop at the Miffy Museum. The world-famous children's book character, Miffy, was born in this city, from the imagination of Dick Bruna, a Utrecht native. Today, she's a recognizable icon all over the world, but Utrecht remains proudly her hometown, and you'll spot Miffy statues and murals all over the city.

On this day tour, it may feel as though famous figures from Utrecht’s history are cycling beside you as your guide regales you with tales of the city’s most distinguished residents. You’ll meet Anna Maria van Schurman, the first female student in the Netherlands, who attended Utrecht University, and get to know the only Dutch Pope, Pope Adrian VI. Your bicycle tour will also make a stop at a local cafe, where you'll enjoy a hot or soft drink included in the price of the tour. Soak up the friendly, relaxed ambiance of the city, and chat with your guide about the best things to do with your remaining time in unparalleled Utrecht.
