Designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and built on the site of Tre Kronor Castle (destroyed by fire in 1697), the palace was eventually completed by architect Carl Hårleman after Tessin’s death, with Hårleman playing a large part in the design of the sublime Rococo interiors. These days, the palace draws around 800,000 admiring visitors every year.

The Royal Palace is situated in the famous Old Town region of Stockholm, known as Gamla Stan. Here, you’ll cycle past the typical Swedish-style buildings dating from the 1600s and 1700s, although you can find buildings here which date back as far as the thirteenth century.
