    • Discover the mystical Mount Ainos on a downhill mountain biking tour

For an exhilarating bike tour of Mount Ainos with the added benefit of bike rental, look no further. Located 30km from Argostoli and the tallest mountain in Kefalonia, Mount Ainos is known locally as Monte Nero, or “Black Mountain”. It earned its nickname during the Venetian period for the dense population of Kefalonia Fir trees, renowned for the dark coloring that gives the mountain an eerie, magical mystique.

Your guided day tour follows a dirt track down through Ainos National Park, winding you through dense, atmospheric forest roamed by mysterious wild horses. From the peak, you’ll be stunned by panoramic views over this majestic island and its rugged, beautiful coastline. Then, it's an exciting downhill bike ride to the base, where your guide will transfer you back to the starting point.

A Well-Paced Scenic Descent (with some climbing)

        · Kefalonia Ainos Mountain Bike Tour

My friends and I joined this morning tour with minimal experience on mountain bikes. Our worries about reaching the top of the mountain shouldn't have worried us as our guide put us at ease and moved at our pace. The views were one of a kind as we cruised down the fire road along the side of Mount Ainos. We continued out of the park, eventually finding our way to a bit of pavement and then more fire roads. There was a small amount of climbing somewhere in there but nothing too strenuous. We ate local snacks and learned more about the island. Eventually, we passed through a number of small towns and ended the tour in Sami. All of us were very pleased with the experience and would sign up to do it again!

Gorgeous, off the beaten track trail!

        · Kefalonia Ainos Mountain Bike Tour

The Mt. Ainos Mountain Bike Tour provided spectacular views of the area from a gorgeous mountain view lined with trees. The terrain is rocky and can obviously change with the weather (rain, wind, etc.), so you need to be comfortable riding on that type of terrain. The last 11 km. or so is downhill on the road and lots of fun! Lambros is an outstanding guide, making sure that everyone in our group was comfortable. (We were a group of 4 with differing riding abilities.) He changed a flat tire without flinching. He was excited to show us the route of the Mt. Ainos marathon that he organizes. Lambros is a warm, fun, highly skilled guide who is proud to share the gems of Kefalonia with his guests. Highly recommend this ride if you have off-road riding experience and you're looking for an off-the-beaten path experience in Kefalonia...something you won't read about in the standard 'things to do in Kefalonia' travel guides.
