  • A sensational 7-night cycling adventure along the iconic Danube

This is the 'Classic' version of the Danube Bike Path tour. For 4 and 5-star hotels in different towns along the way, please also see the Upscale Lodging version of this tour. For a sportier break featuring longer cycling distances on a more compact itinerary, see the Danube Bike Path 5-nights (Active) tour.

Explore the picturesque paths along the winding Danube River, like the Romans did, the legendary Nibelungs, as well as Europe's powerful kings and emperors. You'll get to know the beauty and historical significance of this ancient military and trading route, whilst never being far away from the cool, clear waters of the river on one of Europe's most popular and beautiful cycling routes.

Pedaling off from the baroque town of Passau - the 'City of Three Rivers' - you'll cycle through the various breathtaking districts of Upper and Lower Austria, finally arriving in the Danube metropolis of iconic Vienna. You'll fall in love with the natural beauty of the verdant Danube Valley, the stunning Schlögen Bend, and the wonderful landscapes of the Machland, Strudengau, and Wachau.

In rural areas, to accompany the excellent impressions garnered from your ride, you'll enjoy many traditional Austrian delicacies, from savory dumpling specialities to the moreish wines of the Wachau region's Buschenschenken taverns. Your physical wellbeing will be well catered for!

This cycle tour is a true classic, ideally suited as a first cycling holiday with the whole family. You may even find a special family-friendly version of this itinerary, which offers shorter daily rides. Children's bikes, seats and trailers are available. A support vehicle may be available for an additional charge - please inquire.

The Danube Bicycle Path offers nearly carefree cycling and is an ideal way to view the region. It's flat or slightly downhill all the way, passing through picturesque towns and villages and across lush farmland. It's paved and almost traffic-free, following an old horse path where teams of horses once struggled to tow barges upstream. Along the majestic river, you'll pass romantic castles, cozy villages, and sprawling vineyards.

Many people wish to do research before the tour. We recommend 'The Danube Cycling Path from Donaueschingen to Budapest' and 'Frommer's Guide to the Danube Valley and Vienna'. You'll receive the 'Danube Bike Trail' by Esterbauer at your start hotel. You can purchase it in advance through www.gotrekkers.com. Enter 'BK002' in the search box for the book that covers the area from Passau to Vienna. Enter 'RK1' for a foldable map of the trail. The rates are in Canadian dollars.

  • Daily program

Day 1: Individual arrival in Passau
Arrive in Passau, the 'City of Three Rivers' so-named for its situation at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz, and Danube rivers. We recommend a sightseeing stroll around the city, and especially St. Stephan's Cathedral, famous for housing the world's largest church organ. If you're lucky, you'll head the grand sounds of this incredible instrument yourself (not on Sundays or holidays).

    Overnight in Passau.

    Day 2: Passau – Aschach (40 miles/65 km)
You leave the city of three rivers and cycle to Engelhartszell, where the only trappist monastery of Austria invites you to a liqueur tasting. The route guides you through the natural spectacle of the ´Schlögener Schlinge´ (there the Danube makes a huge bend) to Aschach, where you reach the wide plain of the Eferdinger Basin.

    Overnight in Aschach.

    Day 3: Aschach – Enns (34 miles/55 km)
The bike trail runs through the region of 'Linzer Pforte', with its abbey, through Wilhering, and onwards to the Upper Austrian capital of Linz. Visit the magnificent historic center, including the majestic 15th-century Linz Citadel, standing watch over the dreamy Danube.

Continuing onwards, pedal past two medieval castles as you ride towards the Enns River, heading a few miles upstream to Enns itself. Enns, considered to be the oldest city in Austria, is postcard-perfect city boasting a medieval tower, grand fortifications, and Renaissance and Baroque façades.

    Overnight in Enns.

Day 4: Enns Maria Taferl (44 miles/70 km)
Today you cycle through the rich planes of the Machland area and enter the wild Strudengau-valley with its dreamy little towns and villages. On the way to your destination ́Nibelungengau area ́, you
cycle through lush forests in untouched nature. In Maria Taferl you can see glorious churches located high above the Danube, which attract many visitors each year.

    Overnight in Maria Taferl.

Day 5: Maria Taferl Krems (34 miles/55 km)
This stage first takes you to Melk with its world´s biggest Baroque abbey. Subsequently, you pass winegrowing villages, old fortified churches, and ancient castles of the Wachau region. Soon you reach the 1000-year-old town of Krems.

    Overnight in Krems.

    Day 6: Krems – Tulln (28 miles/45 km)
This distance of your bike trip leads you through the gorgeous region of 'Donauauen' until you finally reach Tulln, known as the 'City of Flowers'. It is worth considering a visit to the Egon Schiele Museum whilst you're here.

    Overnight in Tulln.

    Day 7: Tulln Vienna (25 miles/40 km)
Today you'll pass through Greifenstein and Klosterneuburg as your tour finally brings you into iconic Vienna, 'City of Dreams'. Don't miss out on a visit to the 'Würstelprater', a vibrant entertainment area within Vienna known for its uplifting atmosphere. Enjoy a cup of 'Verlängerter' coffee and a slice of the famous Sachertorte in one of the typical Viennese coffee houses. Alternatively, take a ride in one of the famous 'Fiaker' (horse-drawn carriages), or even a superb cycling day tour.

    Overnight in Vienna.

Day 8: Departure from Vienna and transfer to Passau or extension
Your tour ends after breakfast. Depart, or extend your stay, perhaps considering a cycling day tour in Vienna or Munich.

Optionally, there's a transfer to Passau, daily, with a departure time of 2:00 pm. Pick up service directly at the hotel.

    Surface and terrain

The route mostly follows dedicated bike paths (only a few sections follow minor roads), and the terrain is flat, or slightly downhill. It's paved and almost traffic-free, following an old horse path where teams of horses once struggled to tow barges upstream.

To shorten a day's riding, you can often board a train or barge along the way. Many trains have cars specifically for bicycles, and barges carry them with no problem either.

From time to time you'll cross the river, ride over dams, locks and bridges, and sometimes board small ferries that hold about a dozen cyclists.

    How to get there

    Tour start
    Nearest airport: Munich (MUC), Germany
    Nearest train station: Passau, Germany

    Flights into Munich
If you fly into Munich, your best bet for transportation from Munich Airport to Passau is by train from nearby Freising station. They run at least once an hour, and you can purchase tickets after you arrive in Munich (about €22-28 per person). You'll need to take a 20 minute bus ride from the airport to the Freising station (they leave at 21 after each hour), connecting with a train from Freising to Passau (about 1 hour, 45 minutes). Airport signage is excellent, leading you to the bus and station. Visit RailEurope.com for train schedules and fares or if you'd prefer to purchase tickets ahead of time.

    Flights into Vienna
If you fly into Vienna, we recommend taking the Vienna Airport Lines bus to Vienna's West Railway Station. Trains leave every 30 minutes, and the ride takes 45 minutes. You can purchase tickets in the terminal or from the driver. The cost is about €10. From the West Station, trains leave frequently for Passau, with the journey lasting 2.45-3.25 hours. Cost: €25-50. Visit RailEurope.com for train schedules and fares or if you'd prefer to purchase tickets ahead of time.

Trains also leave the Vienna Airport station less frequently and connect via West Station for Passau. See Austrian Rail at www.oebb.at for information and tickets, which range from €25-65 depending on train and connections.

    Tour end
Nearest airport and train station: Vienna (VIE), Austria

Vienna City Center to Vienna Airport
There are a number of convenient and inexpensive ways to get from Vienna City Center to Vienna Airport (about 15 miles away). Depending on which hotel you stay in and what time your flight is, one option may be better than another. All hotels used in Vienna are happy to provide detailed information. Taxis are also available.

Vienna City Center to Munich Airport
If you are returning to Munich to fly out, trains leave often from Vienna's West Station and Main Station to Munich Main Station or East Station, from which you take local rail (SBahn) number 8 to the airport. Figure on about 5-5.25 hours.

Daily transfer from Vienna to Passau: pick-up service directly at the hotel; duration: about 3.5 to 4 hours; price: €79 per person and €39 per bike, respectively; reservation required; Alternatively: return journey by train; train ticket is available in advance for €39 per person (doesn´t include the transfer of own bikes).

     Dates & Prices Tour Reviews

Disappointing - don't go during shoulder season

I've done four self-guided trips and this trip was my least favorite. The marketing material pitches "storybook villages" but most days are spent riding through corn fields. The hotels were outside of towns and hard to walk to restaurants. Because it was shoulder season, there were very few restaurants open.
First day's hotel was outside of town and front desk advised that we go to the mall for lunch. Fortunately we found a fun restuarant down on the river. The initial meeting with the bike company was disorganized and very brief. He barely talked about the tour, he didn't have tools to swap out pedals, there were too many of us attending the meeting and he said he didn't have time to answer questions - only 60 minutes alotted. We asked for spare tubes for the two road bikes but never got them. Skinny tires get flats!!
The "castle" we stayed in one night was not nice. It was clearly getting renovated - the rooms were nice but there were only five rooms. The property was overgrown and rundown, and with only five rooms it felt very creepy and unoccupied.
Breakfast at the castle - no protein - no eggs, no yogurt. We're on a bike tour and need energy! No fruit, no granola. Breakfast was just six slices of cucumbers, 10 cherry tomatoes, hard rolls, deli meat/cheese. Bar wasn't open for post-ride beer/wine.
Donauhotel Letternof - 11k from Enns, very remote, had to walk to a campground for food. Closest restaurant is cash only, need reservations. Front desk tried to make res but couldn't get through. The ONLY local taxi was working in Linz, not available for us. It was due to rain very hard. Hotel loaned us umbrellas and we went back to the campground for dinner.

Day 3 - arrived at Cafe Braun (the meeting point) at 4:30 and called for shuttle (runs 3-6pm) told to go to a camping store(?) and get the bus as they don't have anyone to pick us up. One guy in our party was willing to make the 3k very steep climb to get us a ride. This hotel was nice but since it was past high season everything in this cute village was closed. Only one restaurant was open.
Last day - Vienna - hotel was so far from center city and far from anything interesting. Very long and confusing ride through busy city. Very limited restaurants. Shortest riding day and yet our bags didn't arrive until 5pm.

      A Bit Disappointing

Cycling along a paved path along the Danube was relaxing for our group of four. Day three was truly beautiful with cobblestone roads and colorful houses in the villages. Wish we had gone earlier in the year as many restaurants and shops were closed for the season.

Great trip for young teens and adults!

Our group of six, ranging in age from 13 to mid-thirties to mid-sixties, had a great time doing the Danube Classic in August 2023.

Throughout the planning process, BikeTours staff was helpful, courteous, and prompt - even when I kept making changes to our hotel and bike requirements.

Although the local tour operator - Radius Tours or Radreisefreunde - failed to show up for our scheduled bike fitting on the day before we starting riding, they provided good bikes and fabulous support van service. I would use them again.

We ordered support van service for the week. Our driver, Ernst, transported our luggage each day, followed us along the route as closely as he could, and provided suggestions on routes and places to stop. When the weather turned rainy or when we encountered the very rare hill that was too much of a challenge for a couple of us, he was there to give us a lift and put our bikes on the trailer. He arrived on time every morning no matter if we planned to start early or late and made sure we made it to our destination at the end of each day. His English was limited so it helped that one member of our group spoke some German. But we think we would have been able to communicate well-enough even if none of us spoke German. He was kind, cheerful, and courteous.

Riding along the Danube is easy - except on the very rare occasion when you have to get up a hill to reach a couple of the hotels. We ordered e-bikes for my thirteen year old nephew and for the adults who didn’t have a chance to get in shape before the trip, but two of us had traditional bikes. Those on e-bikes had no trouble reaching those hotels, but those of us with traditional bikes had to get off and walk - or be rescued by our driver.

Riding along the Danube is also very safe and lovely. Most of the time, you ride on a paved dedicated bike paths and quiet roads through towns and countryside. Sometimes the dedicated bike path runs next to busy roads but we felt safe. Sometimes you have to navigate through light traffic. The route is very well marked with signs. There are bridges and cute bike ferries that enable you to cross from one side of the river to another.

We chose the upgraded (Category A) hotels. They were all quite different, but all were clean and comfortable. All of them served breakfast. Some do not serve dinner, and it is important to know that before you finish riding for the day so that you can make arrangements - especially if your hotel is slightly out of town or up a hill. Based on other reviews, we did not choose the included dinner option at those hotels that offered it, so we were able to order from the menus.

We ordered twin beds for everyone on our trip. In Austria that seems to mean that you get a king-size mattress but two twin-size duvets. Real unique experience!

      The Danube 7 night classic
An extraordinary experience of enjoying the outdoors, the gorgeous and changing scenery, passing through and stopping to discover quaint little towns, friendly people... all at the same time, staying active!
We appreciated the local agent contact and support. The partner bike company in Europe were very accommodating. We asked for some deviations from the package and they were cheerfully provided - Thank you, Kirsten Hollister and Luka Manjgaladze!!
One interesting surprise was The Schloss at Aschach hotel. Although a very unique place with some history, it was contrary to our expectations for overnight accommodations. Although Louisa (the owner's Mom) was so gracious and such a friendly hostess!
The bikes were great! While my wife, who loves biking, chose the manual bike and had absolutely no trouble with it, at 65 years old, I picked the e-bike. Was it necessary? I don't think so, but I'm glad I did. It awarded me the added comfort and ability to focus on enjoying my surroundings, rather than worry about how long do I need to peddle and possible achy old bones at the end of the day :)
      Thank you BIKETOURS

      Quiet roads and beautiful scenary

What a great way to see the sites along the Danube! Starting out the last week of September, the bike trail was very quiet. I enjoyed the solitude and how easy it was to just stop along the way and take in the sites. While the trail was nearly empty, the agricultural fields were busy with harvest activities.
Logistically, everything worked great. The accommodations were all nice and directions to them clear. My bag arrived at every stop.
I would take another tour with BikeTours!

Our Danube Cycling tour - Sept 20-29

Before I get started I wanted to thank Penelope for all her help and assistance.

We had a fabulous time. We flew into Vienna and took the train to Passau
where our hotel shuttle picked us up at the train station. The Hotels that
were set up for us were great although there were some minor snafoos along the way.
The bikes were delivered along with maps and itenerary for us with path suggestions
      hotel locations and contact information.

When we got to our hotel in Ashach, the hotel looked closed and the hotel door was locked.
There was no note on the door as to what to do. We called the contact number and was
told how to check-in remotely but we had to wait until someone walked out of the
door to be able to go in. The placed still looked closed, no lights, etc, but we
did find our room keys at the front desk. Just a little weird but we got through
      it.

We ride a lot at home so 20-25 miles isn't a lot of distance for us so we opted
for the 7 day ride (6 actual days riding). We realized that riding some days
at 40+ miles, although easy to ride, really wasn't enough time to stop and smell
the roses! Our fault for picking this plan but I would suggest to others that
riding 8 days would give you more time to see the sites.

We didn't think a lot of things through, like riding through the Wachau region on Sunday
when everything was closed! Bummer. Beautiful but not a lot open that day. I guess
that is why they ran the Wachau Marathon on that day. Being an ex-marathoner, it was
fun to see all the runners.

We had an issue with the brakes on my bike and we were directed by the Eurobike contact
where to go for the repair in Kremms. It didn't cost a lot and not enough to be reimbursed,
      just some time lost.

The hotels really were marvelous and directions to them couldn't have been better.
Our ride day into Vienna was raining and cold so when we got to our hotel, they
were sorry for us as we shivered and had a coffee in the bar, so they upgraded our
      room! Score!

The path is fabulous on both sides of the Danube. There were "Donauradweg" signs everywhere,
maps of the path and areas, path suggestions into and our of the towns if you wanted to
get off the main path. Guesthouses and cafes along the path were great. We had a fabulous time
and would suggest it to anyone else who might want to ride this route.

First solo trip & first bike trip!

Absolutely would recommend this tour for anyone! I went in April which was a bit chilly, but had the trails to myself. I felt very supported by the staff if I needed, but was independent the whole time. Fairly flat and easy trail, but the mileage added up throughout the week. Hotels were easy to find and lovely to stay at!

Take your time and savor every moment of this scenic ride

I visited the Wachau wine valley on a day tour last year and just had to come back to see more of this trail and I was not disappointed. Such spectacular scenery with mostly dedicated bike trails and even the special bike ferries! As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe the whole time.Very clean, no graffiti, no weirdos living in the bushes. Although the mileage for this bike tour was considered "average", I really would not have minded even shorter riding days. So many places to stop and see along the way...beautiful churches, architecture, cute towns (Melk, just wow!), abbeys, monasteries, museums, coffee and beer breaks. On the longer riding days (60+km), I had to be careful not to spend too much time in one place so I could make it to my hotel before daylight ran out. Signage for the route was clearly posted however it is easy to get distracted by the scenic views. It is advisable to study the map ahead of time and watch for the bridge if you want to cross the river to see a particular monument. Be aware of adding the extra dinner package. You have to select from a special limited menu and it's the same 3 choices no matter what city/hotel you are in. If I were to choose from the regular menu, I would have picked other foods and it would have been significantly cheaper. Overall, I would do this ride again. My advise for future travelers, is to take your time and savor every moment of this beautiful ride.

      Great bike trip!

The bike path along the Danube is excellent. It's near impossible to get lost as the "R1" or "R6" are clearly marked the entire way. I have to agree that this is a "mostly flat" route but when leaving the river and heading through villages, it can be a bit hilly (and we are regular, avid cyclists). We did struggle twice trying to find our hotel (and came across others experiencing the same problem) and needed to use our phones and google maps to find them. Perhaps the tour company could consider more detailed instructions than "turn right at the statue". We never did see that statue!! But that's part of the adventure too! We found two of the hotels a bit far out from the main city area (Aschach and Krems). We prefer finding little cafes or family owned establishments when on this type of trip and do not like eating in the hotel restaurants. In Aschach, there was no meal available at the hotel and after cycling in the POURING rain for 4 hours, we had to either get back on the bike or walk 2 km back to the village to find dinner. The hotels themselves, however, were great. Luggage transfer was excellent. The bikes were good and we never had any problems with them.

      Danube trip

Very scenic, well thought out tour of what has been described as the most popular cycle route in Europe. I picked this tour among other choices because the last day was short, allowing extra time in Vienna and the cations overnights stays.

The (upgraded) hotels were fantastic, breakfasts wonderful. The accompanying maps & books were complete, though directions to popular city attractions would have been helpful (Goggle Maps with cycle directions will be your friend if you want to make side trips) Bikes were in excellent condition, though i found the seat initially uncomfortable (and I ride 40+ miles/week).

I would recommend this tour to those friends wanting to cycle along the Danube, noting that European fitness levels are higher than than American and there are opportunities for elevation for those whose who want it by taking side trips to hotels or other sites/detours.

      Nice but not the Moselle

I cannot sparkly highly enough of the Biketours. The organisation of the trip was flawless, including an exchange of a standard bike for an e bike part way through the trip. We went with the up market accommodation and this certainly meet or exceeded our expectations. One comment I’d like to make was we didn’t realise the upmarket hotels are usually away from the town centres. There were three couple in our group and we all enjoyed the Danube but the general consensus was it was not as pretty or as interesting as the ride we did along the Moselle also with Biketours a few years ago.

      Daube Bike Path 7 nights

The staff were great and the hotels were up to expectations. On commencing the instructions for the first 2 days were good but the bike tracks should be labelled eg R1 or No 6 - this would be helpful. Also with the instructions we were given - you would need a GPS. We rode 10km out of our way because we missed a sign and directions were not helpful. Locals did point us in the right direction ..but we had to resort to "google maps" Some people had assisted with spray painting the track with directions...so our confusion wasn't a one off.

      Downhill on the Danube

I felt like I was riding through a storybook! We loved the beautiful little villages and cities we biked through! We chose to do the tour on our own and we were delighted that the directions and signposts were easy to follow. We biked in late May and enjoyed wild roses and red poppies brightening our trail! Many times we felt we were riding electric bikes because we were flying on the bike paths! We are in our late sixties, in excellent health and found the trail very do-able even though we don’t bike very often.

      Absolutely incredible

Passau to Vienna was beautiful, the Danube breathtaking. Snow capped peaks in the distance, ❤️. The bike trails were better than most US roads. But I did feel some things could have been better. The maps resembled the old AAA trip tiks, mostly accurate unless you are looking for Cafe Braun. The “miles” of 34 daily was an average, that could have been explained better. We had day 1 & 3 @ 49.7 miles. (80k) we had odometers on both bikes, and they agreed. That was tough on day 1. I recommend bringing a GPS.
But mostly it was fun, hard but fun. Excellent accommodations. Great breakfasts. Nice helpful staff, everywhere.

      Exceeded our expectations!

With perfect weather, my wife and I had a great ride. The first three days, about 44 miles each, was tiring but the last couple of days were just about right. Be warned that about 15-20% of the bike paths/roads next to the Danube were shared with cars and no designated bike lanes. They were more like side access roads to properties on the Danube but cars don’t slow down for bikes.
The rental bikes looked like they were new and performed flawlessly. We used one regular bike and one e-bike and charging the e-bike at each night at the hotels wasn't an issue. Although the entire ride was essentially flat, there were a couple of hotels (Maria Talferl and Hotel Steigenberger in Krems) which required quite a bit of effort to get to because they were up on a hill.
Each of the selected hotels were an added special experience as they were surprisingly high quality and provided a great breakfast.
Of special note on the hotels, the Schloss castle in Aschach was quite an experience with 15 foot tall ceilings and a main residence floor which was a museum. The hotel in Maria Talferl, which is up on a hill, had spectacular views of the Danube and the valley below.
We took our first bike trip with Biketours.com last year down the Neckar river where we ate and slept on a boat each night as we rode our bikes down the river. Although this time we were on our own when it came to lunch and dinner, we preferred this type of trip over the boat as you get to sleep in a nice, comfortable hotel at night and eat where you want in each town. Looking at Yelp reviews, we were able to find great restaurants in each destination town and that really added to the experience of getting to know the local environment.
Overall, this was a memorable and very enjoyable trip and one which we would highly recommend.

      A good balance

Nice balance of reasonable cost and comfortable accommodation with excellent bikes. Not all accommodation had air con but we were in an unusual heat wave so wouldn't normally be a problem. We enjoyed the variety and character of our overnights. cycling was easy , i wshed i had not chosen ebike and got more exercise. very smooth organisationally. Thanks

      Fabulous Scenery!

A group of 8 of us did this self-guided tour from Passau to Vienna. The scenery was fantastic, and we were lucky to have great weather on all but the last day. Working with BikeTours was great. They were very responsive to our questions. Checking in and out of hotels, and dealing with the rented bikes were seamless. The bikes were sturdy, and those who rented electric bikes really enjoyed them. The hotels were beautiful, and the breakfasts were wonderful. Unfortunately, we were rained out the last day and couldn't ride into Vienna. But Biketours was willing to transport our two personal tandems to Vienna. The ride itself was pretty flat. There were a few steep climbs in and out of the towns or up to one hotel. We were given 3 manuals of instructions. One of them was rather confusing as it incorporated all possible hotels and destinations, with our specific ride embedded in there. Overall, I loved the ride and would highly recommend BikeTours.

      Passau to Vienna

All the logistics were luggage handling and hotel arrangement were first class. The pre tour briefing was excellent with good tips about places to see. The Mapping was excellent and provided excellent directions and suggested stop over points for lunches etc. The breakfasts and evening meal provided were more than adequate and the 4* hotels were great. The ride was well spaced out with two quite long days about 65 Km being a little long particularly into a head wind. But overall th etrip along the Danube and the services provided made for an excellent self guide tour

Wonderful easy first time bike tour. Flat scenic route with lots to explore along the way. Hotels were all good and very different, only downside was that it was REALLY hot when we were there and there was no air conditioning and some rooms had no cross ventilation.

      Classy trip

We loved this tour. 60-70 km of flat riding during the day, lovely hotels and restaurants to experience at night. The transfer of our luggage was faultless. Some of the hotels were absolutely fabulous. One was disappointing. So much to see and experience during the day.

Bike Trip from Passau to Vienna

Bike Tours did a fantastic job in mapping, transferring our luggage and equipment. This was not a completely flat course but almost flat. They rated it a number 1 (easy). If you are an avid bicyclist I would mostly agree. We are in our 60's and are pleasure riders. Next time we will get electric assisted bike.

      Trip of a lifetime

The bike trip was a little more challanging then we thought. WE were told the trail would be FLAT a 1 % grade well that was NOT true all of the time. We had many many hills to go up and that was not easy at times. We were going to get electric bikes and your company said that was not necessary due to the flatness....We really do wish we chose the electric bikes to help us out at times. WE also had a hard time finding some NOT all of the hotels when we got off the bike trail and we did use the maps and your information. We must say the bikes were GREAT....PERFECT ....and the equipment was really nice ...
Thank you for making this a real adventure for us...

Thank you for your valuable feedback. I'm glad you had the trip of a lifetime! There are indeed some inclines along the Danube bike path, which can start feeling a bit hilly by day's end. I'm sorry if you were given misleading information, and we've reminded our tour advisor team about the terrain and, as appropriate, to recommend e-bikes.

      Rainy Days

Beautiful bike path, superior bike path route signs. Very historical cities and sites.
We booked Class A lodging package with dinner plan and were very pleased with everything except our stay at the Diamond City Hotel, Tulin. Although the Hotel was new and very nice, they sent us to the Albrechtsstuben Gasthof restaurant. It was a totally bad experience. Only 1 other couple dining, all sent from the Diamond Hotel.
Horrible food, although hungry, neither Bonnie or I could eat much. Requested tap water to drink, restaurant would only provide $4 euros bottles of water.
Spoke with other couple in restaurant, and they concurred, "very bad"
Upon return to hotel, I expressed our disappointment with the restaurant.
I was informed that I was the only person that ever complained, everyone else loved the restaurant.
It was obvious, there is a family connection, we saw the women who waited on us, with the desk clerk, together the next day. (All related)
      Overall, great ride

Had been on my list for a long time.

This was the first bike trip we have ever taken. Everything worked very smooth. Bike was good. Luggage was picked up and delivered without issues. Hotels were very nice. We got to one hotel and they had our reservation for the next night. We showed them voucher and they quickly gave us an upgraded room Only problem was that the hotel in Vienna was a bit difficult to get to and far away from the center of town. But they were very helpful in calling a taxi to get us to the airport at 5 a.m. I will definitely recommend this tour to friends. I hope to take another bike tour with your company in the future.

Great trip due to the scenery, companions, and beer.

Overall this was a great trip. I have a few complaints, though.
      1. The bikes. We asked for hybrids and what we got were heavy cruisers (24 # or so) with 21 speeds and barco lounger seats. The seats were comfortable for about 20 miles the first day, then they were downright painful. Next time I'll bring my own saddle if I have to use these bikes. Also two of my companions are well under 5 ft tall and the bikes were big for them and hard to handle.
      2. The distance. We told the company we wanted to do about 40 miles a day but it averaged 56 miles per day (with hot weather and heavy bikes and a headwind the entire way) for 4 days. We thought were spending 5 nights in hotels but it was only 4. I could have sworn I saw 5 days on the itinerary they sent before we left, but I guess i mis-read it.
      3. The directions book. It was a little confusing arriving at the hotel and leaving it daily, as we had to pick out our directions from everyone one else's who were doing a similar ride but staying at different hotels or different villages.
A better approach would have been individual instructions. Especially when we arrived in Vienna. Once we were in town it was still an hour to our hotel through the city at high traffic. I could have kissed the hotel desk personnel when I finally arrived.
      4. Accommodations: 3 out of 4 were great. The breakfast meals were great and plentiful. I would have liked to stay closer in the whatever village or town we were in (for those hotels that weren't) as it'd been nice to have a choice for dinner other than the hotel. Once we arrived, were too tired to bike any further, and we didn't want to spend $ on a taxi. Just a
      suggestion.

      • BikeTours.com staff reply from Jim Johnson August 25, 2017

I'm very sorry you had issues with the rental bikes and distances. The rental bikes are typical for touring along the Danube and on most of the flatter tours in much of Europe, and I personally like them. Definitely a matter of taste! If you're accustomed to road bikes, it often does take some adjusting. We will address the size issues with the local operator. Relative to distances, the route is about 210 miles long. So, if you have four riding days (six or seven days are typical), it will come out to be more than 50 miles per day. At your welcome briefing, you should have been informed about options for shortening riding distance by taking boats or trains, which take bikes. I'm sorry if that did not happen and that, apparently, our staff did not do the math and inform you of the longer distances before you booked.

We will pass your feedback along to the local tour company. Thanks so much for taking the time to provide so much detail! This is always helpful as we work with the tour companies to improve their tours and services and with our own staff to improve our communication to and support of clients.

      Amazing!!!

The biking was perfect for families, exercise with the ability to stop along the way for food or sights of interest. Hotels were charming, very clean, friendly and the food was great. I am already looking into another bike trip next year with bike tours, perhaps Ireland. Need I saw more.

      Great way to see Austria

This is my first bike trip which I made with my 10 y.o. son. We found it easy enough distance wise (made it on regular bikes). The bike path is easy to find most of the time. There were some tricky places, though, where the route description could have been done better. The choice of he hotels for the category C is very good. A little advise: don't rely on the day distance in your travel booklet. Your hotel might be on the next day travel somewhat 20 km farther.

      Biking the Danube!

A summer bicycle ride along the banks of the Danube was great fun: easy biking, clearly marked route, beautiful scenery, friendly locals, what more could you ask? A little knowledge of German is helpful on the self-guided tours, but not necessary.

Another fabulous trip on the Danube

2nd time we have done this trip, this time with 9 family members including 4 children. Fabulous trip with good bikes, excellent directions and supplementary materials. Beyond all that, however, some very special and appreciated treatment by tour provider. A 12 year old grandson sustained a broken arm next to last day (at playground, not on bike). The bike company arranged to pick up him and his mother and their bikes the next morning and transport them to Vienna (our last stop). Very special and very much appreciated.

      a memorable vacation

We enjoyed our bike trip along the Danube River in Austria immensely. Dedicated bike paths that were paved and level made for easy biking. Beautiful scenery along the river and thru farms and vineyards , picturesque little towns, lovely churches, monasteries, and castles. Also toured the concentration camp memorial at Mauthausen. The bike tour company did a great job with all the logistics, planning the route, booking our hotels, and transporting our
      luggage.

Excellent mix of challenge, history and culture

Great way to experience the Danube area of Germany and Austria. Scenery was diverse and there were plenty of extra hills for those that wanted a challenge. Accommodations were clean, local and relevant to the area. Bikes were better than I expected. Looking forward to my next ride.

A view of Europe that we couldn't get any other way

My husband and I chose the self-guided option, and we're happy with that choice -- more flexibility with pace and timing.

Our tour dates were in early May, and this was probably both good and bad. We had some drizzle and a couple days were a bit chilly. On the other hand, the bike path was probably less busy than it will be later. I'm not a fast rider and I'm not comfortable with a lot of other riders whizzing by me. And I suspect that we got upper-end lodging, even though I'd selected middle-grade, because the hotels were eager to have bookings.

I hadn't been able to do all the training I should have, so I opted for an e-bike and it was a very good decision. I still got a workout but I wasn't pushed so hard that I couldn't enjoy the ride.

      Couple of tips:
      - If you're coming over from the US, give yourself a couple of days to recover before you start the ride. And give yourself a day at the end of the ride before there's anything you have to do.
      - Make sure that everybody in your group has all the necessary information about destination, contacts, etc. It's possible to get separated from the others, even when you're trying not to.
      - Make sure that you're comfortable with a bit of traffic -- oncoming riders, you passing people, people passing you. The other bikers on the path trust you to do the right thing and stay in your lane, so be sure that you can. When I wasn't confident about this, I got off and walked my bike.

      So enjoyable!

We had such a good time going from Passau to Vienna. The bikes were great and the signage along the route made it so easy to stay on course. Sometimes making it through a larger town &/or making it into Vienna proved to be an adventure because of the "traffic"
and quick choices to make at those times, but that's part of the charm! Accommodation was different in amenities from day to day but all lovely. Staff were wonderful at every spot. Would definitely recommend it and looking forward to trying another.

      Fantastic ride

This was our second self guided tour with Bike Tours, and once again they provided a well organised tour, hotels were very good value, and our luggage always arrived on time. The bikes were in very good condition, but slightly on the heavy side, the route was easy to navigate and depending how adventuress you are it can be adjusted to see some of the inland towns, and farming area, we added an extra day in Krems to our itinerary to enjoy the Wachau valley.

The Danube valley and all the town along the way were beautiful. The Austrians were almost always friendly and helpful. Danube Ride

A great ride. The hotels were wonderful. The scenery was beautiful. The directions for the route were good. A little more detail for directions to the hotel each day could be improved slightly. But the trip was awesome. Bikes were new and well tuned, and luggage was delivered flawlessly each day.

Excellent bike tour of the Danube and surrounding Austria countryside!

This was our first bike tour and it was a wonderful experience! The hotels and luggage transport were all top notch. The bicycles were in excellent condition and performed flawlessly throughout the trip, but they were a bit heavy compared to our privately owned bikes. The saddle bags were invaluable and easily detached so you could carry them into the hotel room at the end of the day. The directions to get from city to city was great, but occasionally a little vague on getting to the hotel at the end of the day. Also, it should be noted that crossing the river by ferry was always easier than crossing at the bridges and dams.

Family celebration of my 80th year

An excellent trip--great hotel locations, marvelous breakfasts, great views from hotel terraces. An electric assisted bicycle allowed me (age 79) to enjoy bicycling with my two sons, their wives and four grandchildren (ages 12, 14, 14 and 17). The maps and directions provided for the self-guided tour took us on safe bike paths through forests, wheat fields, through small towns, past castles and churches, and of course, along the Danube River.

Nice country riding along the famous Danube

Overall our trip was fun. The hotels ranged from wonderful (in Maria Taferi and Vienna), to pretty nice for the price.

We're fairly strong road cyclists but nevertheless found the rental bikes very heavy. The mileages for the first few days were long and with those heat bikes it was tiring. We would suggest a rest day around day 3 or 4, or alternatively lower mileages on some of the early days.

We loved Passau and would recommend spending an extra day there before the bike tour. Also a day in Vienna at the end.

Biking with friends along the Danube

Our group of five throughly enjoyed our bike ride. The bikes were excellent, with no technical problems. Every hotel that we stayed in was different from the others and offered us an excellent accommodation. We were supplied with a set of maps and various coupons. We particularly loved the free wine tasting and 600 year old cellar tour. The terrain, small villages, and varied weather all played their part in our wonderful adventure.

      Fabulous Trip

Our seven day trip along the Danube was delightful. Five of us (all over 65) from Northern California began in Passau. Try to get there early as this charming city has much to see.
The hotels were beautiful and most had delicious restaurants and fabulous breakfasts each morning.
If I were to do it again I'd do the trip in 10 days to have more time to explore Linz, Melk, Enns, Tulln and Krems and have a shorter biking day.
Anya and the staff are so wonderful and responsive.

      First Bike Tour

This was our first bike tour (September 2015) and I went with my wife and 27 year old son. The route was wonderful, and if you are looking for a beginner trip, this one is great (my son, a more experienced biker, felt it was not challenging enough). We have since take another, more challenging tour, and can see how accommodating the Danube route is.
The route is mostly flat, on dedicated bike trails and very well marked. Your only basic decision each day is which side of the river to ride on. The information provided by the tour company was excellent and we never got lost. The weather was also very good (it only rained one afternoon) which also contributed to the enjoyment. Although they varied in quality, the accommodations were basically very good. I really enjoyed seeing the country on a bike tour. We did cut the last day short, and rather than cycle into Vienna, we took a train. Another group started and rode the same route as us, cycled into Vienna and based on what we heard from them, we made the right choice. We spend a couple of days in Munich at the beginning and a couple of days in Vienna at the end, which were both wonderful cities. All in all, highly recommended especially if you are looking for an introduction to bike touring.

A great trip with lots of memories

My husband, two teenage grandsons and I did this trip. It was marvelous. The beautiful Austrian towns were so bike friendly. We are not fast bikers, so we did feel like some parts we did not have time to explore adequately. It would have been nice to stay some place more than one night. We took the deluxe tour version and the hotels were fabulous. Would absolutely recommend this trip for anyone, but especially families.

A trip I'd dreamed of for many years brought to reality in every way!

The tandem bike was reliable and fairly comfortable, the sites were awesome, directions flawless and lodging friendly, clean and lovely. We were very happy with this self-guided trip, our first bike expeirence in Europe. We did have a broken chain on the 2nd day, but my hubby made a trail repair and the company came to our hotel and replaced the chain that night. This is a great tour and I was shocked today when looking for our next one that I hadn't reviewed it. I would recommend this as a first European bike experience to any cyclist.

Great trip for leisurely bikers seeking variety and leisurely travel

I went on this tour as a BikeTours.com staff member, and I think this is a great tour for a variety of folks. There are big cities, forests, small towns, ancient ruins, vineyards, and more. The cycling is very easy and simple to navigate. The directions and maps are basic, and leave you to discover things on your own. The tour is 95% or more on bike paths. You do have to leave the bike path oftentimes to venture to the night's accommodations. All of the accommodations were quite lovely, and breakfast ranged from adequate to delicious! I think I could take my entire family on this tour, from my grandma to my baby cousin and everyone would love it. It's really is the quintessential European bike tour experience.

Austria is a perfect country to cycle in!

This was a highly enjoyable tour. I really thought the inns/hotels chosen were nice and friendly. The only think I would recommend is not getting the pre-paid dinner. The set menus got a little monotonous after a while.
