Daily Program
Day 1: Arrival in Amsterdam – Sail to Vianen
9 miles / 15 km
Your journey begins in Amsterdam, a city shaped by centuries of trade and innovation. Arrive early to explore its renowned museums or wander through the UNESCO-listed canal district dating from the Dutch Golden Age. Boarding the Iris begins around 1:00 pm, with early luggage drop-off available. As the ship departs, it follows the IJ and the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal, offering a first glimpse of the waterways that connect much of Europe. In the afternoon, enjoy a short introductory ride along the River Vecht, passing elegant country estates, historic farms, and traditional windmills. Dinner is served on board while sailing toward Vianen, a small fortified town on the River Lek, where an evening stroll through its old streets offers a peaceful introduction to life along the river.
Day 2: Vianen – Kinderdijk – Dordrecht
30 miles / 48 km
Today’s ride reveals the Dutch countryside at its most classic, with open pastures, grazing cattle, and narrow canals stretching toward the horizon. Cycle to Schoonhoven, a town known for its silversmithing tradition spanning more than six centuries, and enjoy time to explore its compact center. Continue to Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring nineteen 18th-century windmills built to manage water levels and prevent flooding. After your visit, return to the ship for a short sail to Dordrecht, the oldest city in the Netherlands, whose historic canals and leaning church tower reflect its former importance as a trading port.
Day 3: Dordrecht – Willemstad – Tholen – Antwerp
25 miles / 40 km
Enjoy breakfast on board as the ship sails toward Willemstad, a well-preserved star-shaped fortress town designed during the 16th century. From there, begin cycling along the Volkerak locks, an impressive part of the Dutch Delta Works. The route continues to Tholen, once an island surrounded by estuaries and still marked by its fishing heritage and small harbor. In the afternoon, rejoin the Iris for a scenic sail to Antwerp, Belgium’s second-largest city, where the Cathedral of Our Lady dominates the skyline.
Day 4: Antwerp – Temse – Dendermonde
20 or 32 miles / 32 or 52 km
The day begins with time to explore Antwerp, often called the City of Diamonds and Art. Highlights include the Grote Markt, historic merchant houses, and the baroque Church of St. Carolus Borromeus. Cycling begins with a crossing beneath the River Scheldt through a historic tunnel still used by cyclists and pedestrians today. The route follows quiet dikes through rural landscapes dotted with castles and meadows. Stop at Castle Wissekerke before continuing to St. Amands or Dendermonde, where the Iris is moored. The evening includes a Belgian beer tasting on board.
Day 5: Dendermonde – Ghent

The afternoon is free to explore independently or join a guided walking tour.
Day 6: Ghent – Bruges
25 miles / 40 km
After time to further enjoy Ghent, cycle through farmland, tree-lined lanes, and small Flemish villages toward Bruges. Stop for lunch at a local estate before following a former railway path that leads directly into the city. Bruges, often called the Venice of the North, is renowned for its canals, medieval bell tower, and cobbled squares. The Iris docks close to the historic center, making it easy to explore on foot or by bike. Evening options include dinner in a local restaurant or a stroll along the illuminated canals.

Boats
Iris
The Iris navigates on rivers and canals in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, and Germany.
Many of these barges are former working river vessels, converted specifically for this kind of passenger vacation. The barges comply with the strict safety regulations set forth by the Dutch Shipping Inspection Authorities. Do not expect a luxury cruise ship. The experience of the tour is built around guests being active cyclists, and the layout of the barge supports a social environment in common spaces.
