Algarve
Portugal's sunny getaway
The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal and is often considered Europe’s sunniest spot. Dotted with Moorish-inspired buildings, Roman ruins, and ancient walled towns, there are sites to be seen at every corner. The landscape is equally-breathtaking, with mountains, inlets, natural lagoons, beaches, limestone caves, and the blue-green ocean. You won’t go hungry, either: the region is known for its seafood, oranges, figs, and almonds, as well as four distinct types of local wine.
The sunny weather and Mediterranean sea breezes draw cyclists from around the world every year. You’ll pedal on dedicated bike paths and side roads with little traffic across the coastline and into the rolling hills. Cycling in much of the Algarve is suitable for families with children, and there are also tours for cyclists looking for a challenge.
“Cycling through the Algarve was outstanding. What a perfect place to tour by bike. The people are kind and the scenery is outstanding. The challenge of riding made the trip better than I expected. Every day was different scenery and terrain.”
