Cycling in Apulia and Basilicata with BikeTours.com

Stefani Jackenthal, an adventure travel and wine journalist, and author of Wanderlust Wining, recently went on a modified version of the Apulia and Basilicata tour. See her short write-up and photos below, and check out her full article, “I biked and boozed across Southern Italy” at www.nypost.com.

I was traveling alone and wanted to do a point-to-point cycling trip in Puglia (also known as Apulia) and Basilicata, in south Italy without having to carry my things. Biketours.com had the solution. They connected me with a local operator who supplied me with a bicycle, maps, and transported my luggage to lodging, which was organized as part of my self-guided tour.

It was a wonderful trip, allowing me to travel at my own pace, while exploring historic towns, visiting the Tenuta Parco dei Monaci Winery, and taking a cooking class at Agriturismo Bufalara, 544-acre eco-lodge and working farm, where I stayed one evening.

I met local cyclists along the way and discovered new culinary and wine delights. My pedaling journey ended in the fascinating town of Matera, a UNESCO site known for its labyrinth of ancient cave dwellings and endless stairs.
