Sitting at the meeting point of Europe, Asia, and Africa is the Greek peninsula. Bordered by the Aegean, Ionian and Mediterranean Seas, Greece has a uniquely rich history etched in every corner of the country. Archaeological remnants of the ancient Greek civilization include Delphi's Temple of Apollo, the Acropolis in Athens with its renowned Parthenon Temple and Olympia's Temple of Zeus, where the Olympic games were held every four years. Trips to these sites also provide an opportunity to visit Greece’s 200 state museums and 107 private museums. Most notable is the Archaeological Museum of Olympia and the new Acropolis Museum that houses over 4,000 finds from the Acropolis.
A trip to Greece is not complete without visiting one of its 6,000 islands, of which only 227 are inhabited. The Greek isles share an ideal climate with crystal clear waters, but feature highly diverse coastal areas ranging from sandy and rocky beaches to sheltered coves to coastal wetlands. The outstanding cuisine of Greece is always a highlight as well.
Why cyclists love it
Sunny weather and low humidity enable cyclists to enjoy Greece year round. With mountains and hills forming 80% of the country, Greece is an excellent place for both mountain biking and moderate road biking. Traveling by bike and boat throughout the Greek isles, cyclists can experience the scenery, cuisine and history of the coastal regions.
