The Lake Constance cycle route is one of the most popular bicycle routes in Europe.
On this tour, you will cycle around the entire lake and get to know three countries and several islands. The main highlights are the medieval towns of Konstanz, Stein am Rhein, Meersburg, and Lindau with the festival town of Bregenz.
In comparison to other cycle routes, the daily routes are relatively short as there are a variety of places and attractions waiting to be discovered. You will be able to enjoy the amazing landscape of the lake against the backdrop of the Alps, romantic villages, and sleepy towns around the glistening lake.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Constance
Welcome to Constance! Upon arrival, take some time to explore the area with a stroll through the old town or a visit to the striking flower island of Mainau. Delve into history at the Archaeological Museum or discover marine life at the Sea Life Center.

Day 2: Constance – Gailingen / Wangen / Hemmenhofen

The adventure begins! Start the journey by riding along the Swiss shoreline of the Untersee. The scenic and liesurely first day will take you through the medieval town of Stein am Rhein, known for its beautifully painted facades. Continue cycling onward to Gailingen, or pecal farther to Wangen or Hemmenhofen on the idyllic Höri Peninsula.

Day 3: Gailingen / Wangen / Hemmenhofen – Ludwigshafen / Sipplingen / Überlingen
28-37 miles/45-60 km
Today the route has you exploring the Höri peninsula, ending in the spa town of Radolfzell. You will have the opportunity to visit the highest church tower along the lake, Radolfzell Minster. Pedal along the Bodanrück hills and past numerous orchards on your way to Bodman and Ludwigshafen on the shores of Lake Überlingen. Continue along the cycle path to Überlingen from where you can see the stunning St. Nikolaus Minster.

Day 4: Überlingen – Kressbronn / Lindau
28-37 miles/45-60 km
Pedal along the northern shoes of the Obersee, making a stop at Birnau Pilgimage Church. This baroque church is scenically set among the vineyards with sweeping views of the Lake. Today's highlights include the pile-dwelling museum in Unteruhldingen, Meersburg Castle—the oldest inhabited castle in Germany—and the fascinating aviation museum in Friedrichshafen. Finish today's route in Lindau, making sure to walk around the old town island, where you can see the towering Alps in the background from the harbour.

Day 5: Kressbronn / Lindau – Arbon / Horn
28-31 miles/45-50 km
Not far from Lindau, you will pass the border to Austria almost unnoticed. Take a break in Bregenz and take the cable car up to the Pfänder, the local mountain of the festival city - including a fantastic view of Lake Constance and over 200 Alpine peaks. Just a stone's throw from Bregenz, you'll cross the Bregenzer Ach river at Hard as well as the Alpenrhein river. Welcome to Switzerland!

Day 6: Arbon / Horn – Constance
19-28 miles/30-45 km
The last day of your tour takes you through Romanshorn which is home to Switzerland's largest harbor on Lake Constance. Now you continue on along the banks of Lake Constance back to Constance. Let your tour come to a pleasant end with a wander through the old town or an ice cream down at the harbor.

Begin your cycling holiday along the Swiss shore of Lake Constance’s Untersee, riding to the charming medieval town of Stein am Rhein. Take time to explore its beautiful historic centre, famous for colourful painted façades and well-preserved half-timbered buildings.

Day 3: Gailingen – Überlingen
28-37 miles/ 45-60 km
Cycle around the Höri peninsula to the spa town of Radolfzell, home to the impressive Radolfzell Minster. Crossing the hilly Bodanrück, you’ll pass Bodman-Ludwigshafen and Sipplingen before following the lakeside cycle path to Überlingen. Admire the striking St. Nikolaus Minster and enjoy a stroll along the scenic lakeside promenade with beautiful views across Lake Constance.

Day 4: Überlingen – Lindau / Kressbronn
28–37 miles/45–60 km
Today’s route follows the shores of Lake Constance’s Obersee. Along the way, you can visit the pilgrimage church of Birnau, beautifully situated among vineyards with panoramic lake views. Continue through Unteruhldingen, home to a fascinating pile-dwelling museum, and Meersburg, with its historic old town and castle. The route then continues through Friedrichshafen, known for its aviation history, before reaching Lindau, located on an island in the lake. Take some time to enjoy the harbor and its views of the Alps, with the famous Bavarian Lion and lighthouse as landmarks.

Day 5: Lindau – Arbon
31 miles/50 km
Today you’ll cycle from Germany into Austria, passing through Bregenz, the capital of Vorarlberg and home to its famous lake-stage. You’ll then continue along the shore of Lake Constance to Höchst, where you cross back into Switzerland. From there, pedal a few more kilometers to reach Arbon, your destination for the night.

Day 6: Arbon – Constance

Today’s ride takes you through Romanshorn, home to Switzerland’s largest Lake Constance port. From there, follow the scenic lakeside cycle path back to Constance, where you can spend the afternoon exploring the charming old town or relaxing with an ice cream by the harbor.

Day 2: Konstanz – Stein am Rhein – Radolfzell
31-37 miles/50–60 km
Cycle along the southern shore of the Untersee through picturesque Swiss fishing villages to Stein am Rhein, famous for its beautifully frescoed medieval buildings. Continue along the lakeshore to Gaienhofen, enjoying magnificent views across the lake and the Swiss shoreline. The route then passes through Horn and Moos before reaching the spa town of Radolfzell. Along the way, small beaches, cafés, and picnic areas offer plenty of opportunities to relax.

Day 3: Radolfzell – Überlingen / Uhldingen
16-22 miles/25-35 km
Starting in Radolfzell, cross the Bodanrück peninsula, with a few short but steep climbs at the beginning. Your effort is rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of Lake Constance and the surrounding countryside. From there, enjoy an easy ride to Überlingen, where you can explore the historic old town, peaceful city gardens, and Mediterranean-style lakeside promenade.

Day 4: Überlingen – Lindau / Bregenz
37–43 miles/60–70 km
Enjoy a scenic ride along Lake Constance, with plenty of cultural highlights along the way. Visit the Baroque Pilgrimage Church of Birnau, the Pile Dwelling Museum in Uhldingen, the medieval old town and castle of Meersburg, and the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen. Continue to the famous island town of Lindau or nearby Bregenz, known for its spectacular floating stage on Lake Constance.

Day 5: Lindau – Horn
25miles/40 km
Ride along mostly flat paths to Bregenz, Austria, with plenty of opportunities to stop for a refreshing swim in Lake Constance. In good weather, consider taking the Pfänder cable car for spectacular views of the lake and surrounding Alps. Continue into Switzerland through the Rheindelta nature reserve before reaching today’s destination, Horn.

Day 6: Horn – Constance

Cycle along the shores of Lake Constance through Romanshorn, home to Switzerland’s largest Lake Constance port. Continue along the lakeside back to Constance. Finish your trip with a stroll through the historic old town or enjoy an ice cream by the harbour.

Tandem bike
Manufactured by Drössiger, these special touring tandems are primarily designed for longer distances. Designed for increased stability in order to be suitable for inexperienced tandem cyclists. A wonderful way to level our the differences in fitness levels as you learn to cycle together and enjoy the tour even more!

Pedals:
The bikes will have flat pedals. If you want to bring your own clip in pedals, the bike mechanics in Constance can assist you in changing them.

Helmets are not available to rent but can be purchased at the bike shop in Constance. If you don't want to purchase a helmet, please bring your own.
Bike Protection:
Bike protection is included in the cost of your bike rental.
Surface and terrain
The first three stages are moderately hilly, otherwise the route is mainly level along tarred cycle paths close to the lake. The path runs partially along the lakeshore and partially along lakeshore roads. Sporadically there are short, unfortified sections, around Friedrichshafen the cycle path runs parrallel to the highway. The lakeshore is mostly open to the public.
The ratio is around 90% cycle path and 10% road shared with car. Similarly, 90% of the roads are asphalt, the rest are dirt or small stones.

Trains run frequently between Konstanz and Zurich (airport and city). It's about 65 minutes between the airport and Konstanz and 80 minutes between downtown Zurich and Konstanz.
